Themes of chapter 6

the prominent theme of chapter 6 is fear. During the night, a parachute carrying a dead man landed on the island. The twins mistake the silhouette of the dead man to be a beast that was "something moving behind its head--wings." the beast represents the prevailing theme of fear within all of the boys on the island.

The balance between civilisation and savagery shifts as Ralph's control over the group diminishes. Fear influences the breakdown of morality, order and civilisation, impacting on Jack's rise to power as he uses "The beast" and the characters fear as a way to manipulate the characters into following his leadership.

"I'm chief. We've got to make certain [that there is no beast]. Can't you see the mountain? There's no signal showing. There may be a ship out there. Are you all off your rockers?" -This quote highlights how Ralph is in a struggle for power, he is realising that saying that "I'm chief" doesn't mean that anyone will listen to your authority- he needs people to help enforce it.

"It was furry. There was something moving behind its head—wings. The beast moved too—"
"That was awful. It kind of sat up—"

"There were eyes—"

"Teeth—"

"Claws—"

"We ran as fast as we could—" As seen here Sam and Eric see the dead parachutes but because of fear they see it as the beast yet they don't realise that they aren't seeing the beast the beast is taking over them. Their fear is influencing their decisions which is affecting creating the breakdown of mortality, order and civilisation

Simon makes the realisation that the beast is actually..
" The picture of a human at once heroic and sick". He as realised that the beast is the savegary that lies with in every human. Simon looses his innocence realising this.

Why this chapter is important?

This chapter is important as it is plays a vital role in establishing how order and management come undone. The arrival of the beast is their subconscious mind playing with fear. This shows the importance of peace of mind and how when humans have nothing to gather information from they can make up things that could be a possibility. Chapter 6 is also the start of the end for Ralph's reign as camp leader. This is a pivotal point in the book as it now allows jack to start manipulating other kids to do what he wants and eventually attempt to kill Ralph. This chapter is a chapter which is pivotal to the rest of the novel as it introduces the beast and gives the reader the fist glimpse of the chaos and disorder that is about to unfold.

All of the boys are sleeping while an aerial battle takes place above the island. Sam and Eric were supposed to be up watching the signal fire however they had both fallen asleep, while everyone was sleeping a dead parachuter from the battle flew down to island. After the boys wake up, the dead parachuter seems to be moving because of the wind, the boys panic and believe it is the dreaded beast. They rush to ralph in panic and all the boys are called to a meeting. After the meeting the boys decide to explore the island to try and find the beast and come across an area they haven't seen before. After coming across the unknown area the boys are scared so Ralph investigates the area alone. The boys begin to bond and play again and for the first time refuse jacks wants therefore meaning civilisation and savagery on the island shifts.

Examples of foreshadowing in the book 'Lord of the Flies" include when in chapter 6, boulders roll of castle rock which foreshadows piggy death. The early set-up of Ralph being at odds with jack foreshadows the struggle between good and evil and the violence to come.
Jack ask Ralph a rhetorical question "frightened?" by doing this he is forcing Ralph to answer as he doesn't want to seem week in front of his peers on the island.
"there were eyes-"
"teeth"
"claws"
This is how the two boys on guard describe the beast, yet they only say a parachute . This once again highlights the preconceived fear the boys are imagining about the beast and how it is already impacting what they think>

Simon is the first to realise that the monster on the island is not a real, physical beast but rather a savagery that lurks within every human being. However, he fails to convince the others as the others can't see the world as he does.

The adult world is talking about the war taking place. The boys world is similar through the savagery.

Jack's whole attitude has been to defame the conch as he felt like the conch took away from his natural authority and control. As Jack slowly usurps power from Ralph, he also diminishes the conch.

Golding tells the reader about the airman as the readers can then see the characters paranoia and decent into savagery influenced by the "beast" who only the audience and Simon realise that the 'beast' is within the boys.

Jack and piggy have many differences and these are extremely important to the allegory of lord of the flies. they both represent opposite forces and different ways of thinking. Piggy represents civilization and the world of thought and reason. He is fat, ugly, soft, and weak. His strength is in his ability to reason. on the other hand you have jack who is practical thinking who likes to be hands on. Jack also has a sinister side that we don't see in Piggy. This is an important metaphor for how the world is a soft place that tries to reason but then with the influences of bad people can be manipulated and end up dying in the case of Piggy.
