The shape of the pyramids were thought to represent the descending rays of the sun, they were often polished with white limestone, in order to give them a brilliant appearance.
One theory is that the pyramids were designed as a type of "resurrection machine." All Egyptian pyramids were built on the west bank of the Nile, which is the site of the setting sun, associated with the realm of the dead.

Nut (the goddess of the sky)and Seb (the god of the earth) had four children; Osiris, Isis, Set and Nepthys.
Osiris married Isis, while Set married Nepthys. Osiris taught men how to predict when the river would flood and how to plant grain and harvest crops. He became a great king and ruled over the people of the Nile.
Set was envious and cut him into twelve pieces and threw him into the Nile. He declared himself King.
Isis wept for her husband until Anubis, god who guides the dead to the underworld, helped her find Osiris and wrapped the pieces in cloth to preserve him. Isis was the goddess of life, she used her magic to bring him back. During this time Isis had a son named Horus, falcon-headed god of the sky. Isis' magic couldn't bring Osiris back forever. He became the god of the dead in the underworld. Horus fought Set and drove him into the desert. Horus ruled over Egypt, second only to the sun-god in his power.

The day came when the sons of the woman Rud-dedit were to be born. Her husband, the high priest of Ra, prayed unto the goddess Isis and her sister Nepthys; to Meskhent, goddess of birth, and to the frog goddess Hekt; and to the creator god Khnm. The dieites heard him. The goddesses came as dancing girls and Khnm followed them as their burden bearer.
Isis called the first child, who was born Userkat, and said "Let no evil be done by him." Meskhent prophesized that he would become king of Egypt. Khnm gave him strength. The second child named Sahura was also prophesized to be become a king. The third was called Kaka. The dancing girls left and the high preist gave the burden bearer a measure of barley.
The deities caused a great storm to appear andreturned the barley to the cellar saying they would return again to take it away. Rud-dedit ordered her servant to bring barley from the cellar to make beer. One day Rud-dedit was angry with her servant and hit her. The servant wanted revenge and went to her uncle and told hime of the three sons. He struck her. The servant went to collect water at the Nile and was eaten by a crocodile. The boys were kept a secret.
