Acknowledge the responses in the room in a compassionate and understanding way.

If the situation doesn’t change, take a 5 minute break, move on to the next slide. Perhaps remind participants of the ways of working afterwards. Perhaps speak to the teacher afterwards and see if we can offer further support.

Empathising: Feeling of being heard and listened to.

Not coming across as being dismissive or a voice of authority. Self-regulation. Non-reactive.

Remember that audience members may be curious, actually be positive. Putting back the question on them.

Engaging Passive Participants in Virtual Session - Thoughts:

* Establishing Rapport with participants before the session starts - make connection

* Use of breakout rooms

* Structured, clear task, scaffolding engagement

* Assign roles

* Check-ins during breakout sessions

* Use of chat function - some participants more inclined to engage this way

* Managing chat while facilitating can be a challenge - use 2 screens makes it easier

* Invite participants to speak on points they raise in the chat

Design is key to mitigate against negative actions

• planning - time for engagement and building trust.... thinking of strategies to use eg. meet and greet, ice-breaking, setting clear expectations

• Allowing opportunities to re-engage without judgement

• Assume the best and work with that

• Use gentle prompts

Importance of making connections at the beginning of the day

Allowing participants into the main room in stages to encourage them to put camera on and create norms as they are entering the workshop.

Thank them for turning on camera address them individually and by name.

Reminders throughout the day at breaks and returning to main room to turn camera back on and invite people to speak
