After the American Revolution that took place between 1775-1783, the North noticed that slavery was allowed in the Southern states. Because of this, the North wanted to abolish slavery. However when the war ended, the new U.S. Constitution made a right to regain a possession of any person held to service. Basically, it was obvious that this "right" was created for slavery to still exist.

Main Idea: North wanted to call for abolition of slavery.

In the Southern states, slavery existed. Slaves contributed about one-third of the southern population and were owned by masters which they work and live on plantations. If the slaves did not behave well, they would be punished and not be given any favors from their masters. At this time, African Americans or slaves are prohibited to learn to read and write.

Main Idea: Slaves did not have the same rights as any other people and were restricted from rights as humans. Slaves were only to be given favors and did not get a reward for their work.

Ever since Abraham Lincoln was elected president, the Southern states decided to separate from the North and become the Confederate States of America. The North was anti-slavery while the South was pro-slavery. At first, the North wanted to maintain the United States as a nation. But because of the idea of wanting to abolish slavery, it only caused a deadly war between the North and South. Five days after the Battle of Antietam, Lincoln established the Emancipation Proclamation.

Main Idea: The Southern states known as the Confederate States of America seceded from the nation because of anti-slavery in the North.
