What have I learned about Digital Literacy?

Before taking this course, I thought Digital Literacy was just knowing how to use technology and being able to use some tools online. After taking this course, I learned that Digital Literacy is not singular but rather "literacies". Digital literacy is the “ability to find, create, share, utilize, and communicate information through technology” (Cornell). A concept of digital literacy is that its “mastering ideas and not keystrokes” (Digital Literacy 3). These quotes explain that Digital Literacy is much more and this course expanded my knowledge on various digital literacies and how I can incorporate them into the classroom. Prior to this course, my knowledge on Digital Literacy was narrow and this course showed me how and why digital literacy is important in the classroom.

What does Digital Literacy mean to you?

Before taking this course, Digital Literacy was important to me but I wasn't sure how I can incorporate it in the classroom and how I can make it work for my students. After taking this course, Digital Literacy I believe is essential to use in my future classrooms. I think it's important to find which digital tools work best for your students and incorporate those tools in everyday lessons. Digital Literacy sets students up for success in the classroom and outside the classroom. Digital Literacy can be used for various forms of communication from one person to another by sending, receiving, writing, audio etc. Digital Literacy is part of the new age and I feel that every student/person should know how to use it in the classroom and outside the classroom in a productive way.

How can we use aspects of social media (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) for teaching and learning?

Before this course, I learned how to use Twitter chat for classroom use and I thought it was a great way to involve students through social media. The teacher would post a question, statement, or opinion on Twitter and students will respond to the question/statement/opinion with their opinion and also respond to other students to start a discussion on the topic. It was interactive between the students/teacher and got the conversation going. After taking this course, I learned that all of the social media can be use for teaching and learning but have to do it in a positive way. For example, Pinterest is a great social media platform and teachers can get ideas for lessons off of it but sometimes the ideas don't have the "how's" and "why"s" the lesson is important on Pinterest so the teacher will have to look else where. Pinterest is still a good social media platform to use, just have to be conscious on what you are taking or doing on these social media platforms.

Did you have your own personal growth and deepening of understanding of digital tools and literacies?

Before taking this course, I used various digital tools and literacies in other courses for projects or research. I never really took the time to get a deeper understanding of the tools and how it can be important for certain students. I used Twitter Chat in one course last semester and I thought that was a great way to involve students using social media in a positive way. After taking this course, I broaden my knowledge on various online tools to use for classroom use and lessons. I understand now how important it is to incorporate digital literacy in the classroom and how it can effect my students success in the classroom and outside the classroom. I learned that there is ways to use social media and online platforms in positive ways in the classroom and how my students can also do the same and hopefully carry those learning tools outside the classroom.
