1914-1918
The gas masks in WWI were a result of gas that was thrown by The United States' enemy. The masks were "ok" except the fact that the glass was not too durable. It was easily broken and people that had to were glasses would only see a blur because the glass in the masks weren't pre scripted. But gas masks weren't only made out of rubber and glass. Some "homemade" gas mask were constructed out of cloth, and cotton mouth pads. Unfortunately that wouldn't hold up as well as full face gas masks and when Germany threw the mustard gas it, cotton mouth pads and cloth would do much to keep your eyes covered.

1939-1945
In WWII Men and women, even children to the age of 1 or 2, were given gas mask according to their age. The older men and women were given gas masks in a little box with the instructions on how to use it. The younger children were given specific gas masks, the babies were given gas masks that they actually get inside. The masks were made out of black rubber that gave off a bad smell and even made some people very sick. It was also hard to breath in the masks.

2001-2014
The masks that were used in the War in Afghanistan were the most updated and easy to use gas masks of our history. The modern day gas mask is usually constructed out of elastic polymer in various sizes. Corrected lenses are available for those that need them. Some masks even include a water tube if you ever get thirsty or dehydrated. The gas masks in my time are much easier to breath in and way more filtered.
