         <description><![CDATA[<p>Henry supported the study of geography and navigation and for the annual expeditions he sponsored down the western coast of Africa deemed him "the Navigator". His financial support and enthusiasm for discovery kept Portugal from not giving up even though he did not go on voyages himself. Under Henry's direction, the Portuguese founded their first African commercial settlement.</p>]]></description>
