Diversity in London: Chinatown-Soho a prime example worth seeing

Are you visiting London and don’t know where to go? Don’t worry, Chinatown is here to welcome you! Indeed, this district of London has several facets to discover that it’s culturally, architecturally and gastronomically. The diversity present in this district is without equal. It’s good for a general mooch around, with its warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Chinatown is a demonstration to the diversity of the population in London, as it has the largest Chinese population in the city. This is due to its history, as Chinatown was the area of London where Chinese sailors settled in the late 18th century. In the mid-twentieth century, restaurants opened to satisfy sailors and soldiers who wanted to eat quality Chinese food. The new popularity of the area attracted investors who transformed it into the place we know today.

To get to Chinatown, go to Gerrard Street which runs through its centre. Chinatown is part of London's West End. It’s located near Leicester square and It’s really a must-see in London, there is a very good atmosphere and there is much to do in the area.

Indeed, London's Chinatown offers a multitude of small restaurants, grocery shops, supermarkets, boutiques and shops of all kinds specialising in oriental products, often from all over Asia. It's a great occasion to try some authentic Chinese food, either to eat in or to take away. In order to have a bite to eat we advise you to go to Baoziinn restaurant or to the Yauatcha restaurant. With our advice you can be sure not to be disappointed because these two restaurants prepare delicious Asian specialties.

But Chinatown is not only famous for its food but also for the architecture that reflects the Asian diversity of the neighbourhood. Indeed, this area is delimited by 4 beautiful gates that you can't miss. They are one of the most photographed monuments in London. The first was built in 1980 and the last in 2016. It's the most imposing and impressive with its electric blue and emerald green colours. She was built in traditional Quing dynasty style by Chinese artisans. All year round, the district is decorated with Chinese symbols such as dragons and lanterns

This place of London also offers many events, being a Chinese district, Chinatown has to celebrate the Chinese New Year which usually falls in January or February. It’s the best time to visit this area as it's one of the busiest and most exciting times to visit. It's interesting to note that Chinese New Year in London is the biggest celebration outside of China which shows the importance of this area to the Chinese population. This event includes a grand parade through Trafalgar square.

A celebration focusing the International Dragon and Lion Dance also takes place on 1 January. Dragons and lions parade in the streets, it's a perfect event to understand the East Asian culture.

To conclude, if you want to discover a little more of the Asian culture, go to Chinatown…

Lise Kobel and Lola Ebersoldt, 1er4
