Turner was sold numerous times from master to master. Every time he was sold he was forced to leave behind everything he had. The unfair, unjust treatment of slaves and a belief that God had called him to free the slaves led Turner to lead the revolt.

The Raleigh Register attacked the rebellion, "...indiscriminate slaughter of whites, sparing in their bloodthirsty infatuation, neither age, sex, or condition." Hysteria swept through the nation as whites blamed the rebellion on the fact that Nat Turner was educated and knew how to read and write.
