Language give us permission to join a specific group or discussion. However, the idea of proper English breaks that role. People who are forced to learn proper English because of "powerful" country which colonized their own countries are stuck in the middle of two identities. Their pees and family speak another language. It breaks their senses of belonging. Only if when they became actors and when they have masks and when they are able to switch between two speak patterns, they will feel comfortable. Sure, some people also find a way embracing themselves. There should be a language that is above another one. There are only people who think their culture are less valuable.

However, with Dowdy, she and her people was forced to speaking English, "the Queen's English" to be more  "White", to be more powerful. And is it actually her identity? She feels segregated from her people, from her friends, her siblings, her peers of being a "good girl". It will be unfair it we have to compare two languages. No language will be better than any other.

The language they use can represent a lot of things. Speaking British English is the right way and means one's social status. They also think that Trinidadian is the language can not express higher thoughts and inferior than English.  

The author writes that she used the proper English to please her mom and teacher, the proper English helped her preformed well at school.
