During his lifetime Van Gogh was never famous as a painter and struggled to make a living as an artist. Van Gogh only sold one painting during his lifetime The Red Vineyard. This painting sold in Brussels for 400 Francs only a few months before his death. Van Goghs brother theo believed in him and after Van Gogh death he tried to sell his paintings but managed to sell only one.

In Paris Van Gogh was influenced painters such as Gauguin, Pissarro, Monet, and Bernard. Which developed into a very close friendship with Gauguin who eventually became one of the biggest artistic influences on Van Gogh. The pair met in 1887 and later joined up in Arles, where they adopted a similar technique of applying paint more thickly and using heavy brushstrokes. Their themes were also very similar at this time, mainly landscapes and local people.

Dr Paul Gatchet was the person who treated Van Gogh during his stay in Auvers se Oise. Van Gogh painted a picture of him sitting down, looking depressed and a little sad because at that time, doctors didn't have the medicine we have today. Van Gogh was concerned with painting people in different settings from the beginning of his artistic career. People featured in his paintings were workers, people on the street he saw etc. He also painted himself so many times as if asking himself, “Who am I?” Although some of his portraits did have people he knew like the portrait he did of Dr.Gatchet ~ Saniya 7P :)

There was no reason really that Van Gogh only ever sold one of his paintings but the painting that was sold was called 'The Red Vineyard' and was exhibited and shown to public around about 1888.

Van Goph's artwork conveyed his medical, emotional and spiritual state. Many of his paintings consist of light brush strokes which is thought to be due to his medical state. Van Goph started using a lot of colours in his drawings later on also, due to his mental state.
