This story might seem very simple in our eyes in the United States, but in Somalia this became a huge jump for women's rights. The woman's name is Sahra Ali, she is a single mother of 8 children. She lost her husband a little over a year ago to a stroke. Before her husband passed away they purchased a taxi cab with all of their savings.  Now being a single mother of 8, no savings, and only her normal job as a midwife and pharmacist she couldn't make ends meet.  She decided to try something different and cross the gender boundary and drive the taxi that her and her late husband had purchased to help support her family.  After making this step she noticed that a lot of people took noticed and either liked or disliked the stand she was making.  It wasn't her mindset to try to make a difference for women in her country, she only wanted to provide for her family the best that she could.  

In the reading, it was mentioned that "Those who do so-called women's work---traditionally teaching, nursing, food service, and so on..." (Mackinnon, B. & Fiala, A. 2017, pg 315). The reading describes gender discrimination to the point that males and females have two different lives and that men shouldn't do a woman's job or women shouldn't do a man's job. The step that Ali took to take care of her family opened the doors for more women in her city to want to make more money doing a man's job. It is hard to believe that there are places in the world that still have very big gender barriers. It makes me happy to see that people are still making changes happen and hopefully everyone will be viewed more as an individual than just by their gender in every country.
