The word "ballad" camee from the Latin "BALLARE". The ballads exist in many different versions. They used simple language. There are two or four stanza. A main characteristic of medieval  is the refrain. The ballads can be classified:
1)ballad of magic
2)border ballad
3)ballad of love and domestic tragedy
4)ballads of outlows
5) town ballad
