If the child has friends to go to when he/she is in trouble they would go to the friend so that they can motivate them so they wouldn't feel like no one understands them. I don't believe sheltering kids from getting their feelings hurt is beneficial for them later on. Its life, and your bound to get your feelings hurt or at a point feel lonely. If any child feel lonely because they don't have a best friend this will motivate them to build their social skills and talk to new people and make new friends.
