The first stage in creating a supportive group is dependency, where group members look to an authority figure to provide structure. Second is Inclusion or orientation, where group members are concerned most about belonging to the group. The third stage is Dissatisfaction or control, where member express concern about how the group is operating and who makes the decisions. The fourth stage is Resolution or norming, which students begin to listen more thoughtfully to one another and work more collaboratively. The fifth stage is Production, in which student production is high, and teacher simply needs to be attentive to social and academic needs and make the necessary adjustments. The last and final stage is Termination or adjournment, in which students need closure on the group experience and may experience a sense of loss and sadness.

How to establish a cohesive, supportive peer culture in your classroom.

The number one way to establish a cohesive, supportive peer culture is to make sure that students know and understand each other. Students will have a hard time connecting to other students if they have no idea who that student is, which in turn, can create a hostile learning environment because the students won't understand one another. Another way to establish a cohesive, supportive peer culture in the classroom is to routinely do peer-acquaintance activities, so that the level of cohesiveness is elevated.

Peer-acquaintance activities are designed to help students get better acquainted with one another so that they will feel safe and secure and will, therefore, become more actively engaged in the learning process. Peer-acquaintance activities also enhance positive peer relationships, and increases the likelihood that a wider range of peers will be accepted and supported, and it also decreases the likelihood that bullying, intimidation, and isolation will be experienced by students in the classroom.

Knowing how to work in a group environment is such an important skill for students to learn because it helps them build their character and cohesiveness. It also is highly important to stress to students that being able to work in a group is an important skill to have as an adult because almost any job they want has some sort of group work involved where they would have to get along with someone they might have just met.
