1. What does international-mindedness mean to you?

To me international-mindedness goes beyond tolerance of other cultures. One should not need to 'tolerate' the way in which another lives their lives if you have been able to sufficiently escape your own mindset to see the world, at least in part, from their eyes.

A global citizen is someone who understands that they do not live in a bubble, and that even though their culture and upbringing has resulted in them seeing something from a particular perspective, that this is not the only possibility.
They also realize that their actions do not only affect themselves and their local community, but there could be broader ramifications that they must take into account.

3. How do schools today prepare students for global citizenship within biology and other group 4 subjects?

Science is an incredibly internationally collaborative domain in many areas. One can even highlight the advantages of working across cultures. A great example is the research into HIV and cancer. Our human understanding of the relatively simple mechanism of the HIV virus is very limited due to organisations wanting to be the one to find the 'silver bullet'. In the very complex case of cancer where there will never be a magic cure our progression has been remarkably rapid due to the openness of communication between research facilities around the world.

4. What are the ways in which the texts, topics, or ideas in your classroom have benefited from contributions from other communities, cultures, and nationalities?

This is a very easy question for any Australian teacher. Ours being a very new country on the international science scene, the vast majority of major advancements in science have been made internationally. Exploring these contributions is not limited to more recent western advancements such as the European contributions to the periodic table, but can easily be extended to the development of agriculture in the fertile crescent or stone tools in Africa.

5. How can you help your students understand the importance of international understanding as it relates to your course?

Students can be given the opportunity to strive towards competing in an international competitions such as a Science Olympiad or World Solar Championship. It would take only one student bringing back such unique experiences to expose the other students at the school to the fact that we belong to an international community. The school could also establish relationships with overseas schools through video conferencing or an exchange program. My current school has 'sister schools' in both China and Germany

Biology is a subject that lends itself very easily to establishing an international perspective. The subject has progressed well beyond concepts of simple anatomy and physiology. Disease is currently a major topic and many human diseases have either developed or been discovered in particular parts of the world due to unique circumstances. This is an area of human interest that cannot fail to grab the students' attention. Genetics is one of the most international topics of all. We all owe some part of our DNA to a remote region, so a simple exploration of mitochondrial haplotypes can give students greater insight into their ancestral origins.
