Diseased Pariah News

Diseased Pariah News is a great source as it is basically as close to the action as you can get. The ones that ran the magazine were gay men in the middle of the epidemic so they know exactly what is going on. The magazine "Valley of the Ultratwinks" is a great showcase of the need of protection in gay sex. The last page also is a page just disseminating resources for the gay community to use. Clearly there was a need for information dissemination of resources were so clearly linked. This goes to show the need for education in the gay community to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS and will be of good use as a citation in my essay.

1987 MMWR Series from CDC

The Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report was done by the CDC starting in the 80s to combat misinformation. Each week a new report would come out on infectious disease, most often HIV/AIDS and show statistics of the disease. There would also be informational sections on prevention and transmission. This article in particular speaks about infection and the timeline of the infection as well. There are estimates shown of how many people are unaware of HIV/AIDS still. The article also goes into testing and how legit it is. This article would be well used in my essay thanks to the statistics being used and that it is a source from the time of the epidemic itself.

HIV/AIDS Knowledge and Sexual Behavior Among High School Students

This study was done in the late 1980s and 1990s. The study tries to look into HIV/AIDS education in high school and then if that modified any of their behaviors. Ultimately the students that were given more teachings about HIV/AIDS did end up testing better on a knowledge basis about transmission rates and other topics. They were also more likely to report less sexual partners and more condom use as well. This goes to show my theory that not educating will harm more people and that education is essential. I can easily use this study in my essay to show my point especially since it is from the late 1980s and 1990s and is of highschool students. A prime age for transmission of the virus.

For quotes from the story I want to show the ignorance that various characters have on the transmission of HIV/AIDS. A good quote to start on page 329 is "I don’t do that kind of stuff." from Roman when speaking about illicit activities that could lead to gaining HIV. Little does Roman know that normal vanilla sex also leads to transmission.I hope to use quotes like these and various other to show the lack of awareness on HIV/AIDS in the 80s. This lack of awareness caused a great loss of life and with ongoing educational campaigns this can be alleviated. I also think this quote in particular is quite good as it is from an already sexually active and popular young gay man. It shows how deep the misinformation can really go in a usually educated population.

All of these sources in one way or another speak about education on HIV/AIDS. Many of them are from the crisis in the 80s and 90s itself and give good perspective on the time. I think the 80s high school study and the CDCs MMWR series are particularly useful as they give hard statistical evidence. Both then go to show that with more education comes a lower transmission rates than would then lower mortality rates. All of this can easily be used in my essay to push forward my thesis. I think a next good step would to be finding some counterpoints to my argument and then finding a way of disproving them. This way I can have both of my corners covered.
