During the Salem witch trials of 1692, a total of 20 individuals were executed as a result of witchcraft accusations, with most being women. People had the choice of either admitting to being a witch to stay alive or facing death with denial. The methods of execution included hanging and, in one case, pressing to death, as seen with Giles Corey, who refused to enter a plea. The trials were fueled by social tensions, religious fervor, and mass hysteria, leading to a frenzied atmosphere where many were quick to accuse their neighbors. The tragic outcomes of these trials eventually led to public remorse and a reevaluation of the legal proceedings in Salem.

McCarthyism was a political movement in the early 1950s in the United States, characterized by intense anti-communist sentiment and the fear of communist infiltration in various aspects of American life. Led by Senator Joseph McCarthy, it involved aggressive investigations and accusations against individuals in government, entertainment, and other sectors, often without evidence. Many people were blacklisted, lost their jobs, or faced public disgrace due to unfounded allegations of communist ties. This period was marked by a disregard for civil liberties and individual rights. Ultimately, McCarthyism is similar to the Salem witch trials of 1692, where townspeople panicked over supposed witchcraft and accused many innocent people.

The Puritans were a religious group that emerged in England in the 16th and 17th centuries, aiming to reform the Church of England from within. Many Puritans, seeking to practice their beliefs freely, migrated to America, particularly New England. Here, they established communities based on strict religious principles. They emphasized hard work, morality, and a close relationship with God, often interpreting events through a spiritual lens. Their rigid social structure and intolerance for dissent created environments of fear, particularly during events like the Salem witch trials.

During the Salem witch trials, several key events unfolded that highlighted the social tensions and fears of the time. It began in January 1692 when a group of young girls in Salem Village exhibited strange behaviors and claimed to be afflicted by witchcraft. These claims led to the accusation of witches of several local women, including Tituba and Sarah Good igniting widespread panic. The court established to handle the surge of witchcraft accusations allowed spectral evidence, which meant that supposed victims could testify they saw the spirit of the accused harming them, even if there was no physical proof. This leniency resulted in a rapid increase in accusations, with over 200 people named as witches.

Calvinism, a doctrine that emphasized predestination and the belief that God chose people's faith before they were born, significantly influenced the Salem witch trials of 1692. People were closely watched for any signs of wrongdoing, and accusations often stemmed from personal conflicts. The Puritans' beliefs about following societal expectations and fearing the Devil also contributed to the Salem Witch Trials. Puritans believed that those who did not conform were working with the Devil. Overall, Calvinist ideas were responsible for the panic.
