I give in honor of the memories and friends from Vassar and the education I received. I'm also proud to give because of all Vassar does to provide financial aid and programs like Posse and Exploring Transfer.

I give what I can to support Vassar because my VC experience was life changing. The range of conversations in and outside of the classroom shifted my perspective on what I could do to make an impact in my community. The experiences afforded me through study abroad, playing rugby, and working in support of student organizations were enriching in a whole host of ways that I have greater appreciation for now. I'm proud to see Vassar continually invest in their students, faculty, and facilities, offering a world class experience to more than ever before. That's why I give.

Vassar set me up for success! My time at Vassar gave me the skills, confidence and guidance to seek out challenging and enriching opportunities. Equipped with critical thinking, faculty mentorship and an incredible alumni network, I was able to embark on a rewarding career in Arts Administration shortly after I graduated. With the increasing cost of education, I give to Vassar to ensure that the college can support a diverse range of students, who can profit from the school’s excellent resources, as I did!

Allegra and I give because we recognize how incredible our educational experience was at Vassar and we want to pay it forward. Here we are on Founder's Day in 2018 where we are also thankful to Vassar for the opportunity to develop a well-developed palate for beer!

Why do I give? Vassar gave me a full-academic scholarship and I had a chance to play #2 varsity singles under the watchful eye of Kathy Campbell (who also hailed from Illinois). As a former professor of political science, I love the fact that our professors came to Vassar as their first, last, and only academic appointment. Having full-time faculty who possessed an institutional knowledge of Vassar, dating back a couple of decades, boded well for my 1981-1985 cohort aka one of the last classes to be selected by Fred Brooks in Admissions. I loved the 10:1 students-to-professor ratio; Freshman English was like our home room.

I enjoyed my time at Vassar so much that my sibling (another reason why I give), Monica Johnson Macer decided to attend Vassar; she’s in the Class of 1993 and was awarded a partial academic scholarship. Monica (or Mojo her nickname in college) was the sophomore class president, Mug manager and bartender, a member of the Daisy Chain and one of the inaugural African Violets. In Monica’s Freshman English class, she wrote a one-act play entitled “Vassar in a Nutshell.” Her sophomore year, the Vassar administration produced her play and used it as a spring board to discuss race and stereotypes. In the picture above, we are enjoying ourselves at Founder’s Day - one of my favorite Vassar traditions.
