Anzac is the acronym for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. The ANZACS were created during the Great War of 1914-18. Soon the word was being used to describe all Australian and New Zealand soldiers that fought at Gallipoli, eventually becoming a title for any Australian or New Zealand soldier in general.

The Gallipoli Campaign of 1915-16 was an unsuccessful attempt by the Allied Powers to control the sea route from Europe to Russia During World War 1.
In the wider story of WW1, the Gallipoli campaign made no significant mark. The number of dead, although devastating, was far from being anything close to the death toll in France and Belgium. Nonetheless, Gallipoli still holds a large significance for New Zealand and Australia, as many of their people lost their lives during the battle.

Considered insignificant to other countries, Gallipoli holds some importance to New Zealand and Australia, despite being an unsuccessful military operation.
Many of the counties that took part in WW1 consider Gallipoli a very small and insignificant part of the Great War, thinking the battle and death toll were minuscule compared to what was happening elsewhere. For New Zealand and Australia, this was their first look at the war. Having not been involved up until the Battle of Gallipoli made this was big for them.
Lack of sufficient intelligence and knowledge of the terrain, along with a fierce Turkish resistance, hampered the success of the invasion. In the end. there was around 36,000 casualties between New Zealand and Australia, around 11,500 of them being deaths. In memory of their sacrifice, Australia and New Zealand observed a memorial called ANZAC Day.
