We loved it! Thank you for inviting us. I think on our side we do not know how many people would show up to eat. Maybe in future have a way for people to pre-order and receive $ off or something of value the truck/restaurant would want to offer. How many people showed up? Our sales were $597 which for 1.5 hr is something we would do again. I would have staffed a third person too and line would have gone quicker. If you have any other questions happy to help

I think King Arts was a great space, it held the number of people who came and the art was able to be displayed. I didn't stay for the author signing so I'm not sure if that worked out well or not. In the future, will King Arts continue to have enough seats if more parents and students show up?

Curriculum resources

It was nice to see what others were doing with their students to prepare for the visit. I think we're sharing more resources and lesson ideas this year and that we should keep this momentum going.

Billed as an Art Show

I'm glad that a lot of schools did have artwork to display with students since the flyer that went out to promote the event also billed it as an art show. If this will be the case moving forward, then the other fine arts teachers should be more involved in the process earlier on. I didn't involve my team until the beginning of this year. I could have given them more time to plan.

Impressive accommodations

Both Grace Lin and Duncan Tonatiuh raved about the Stone Terrace. Both mentioned that they travel a lot and it was nice to stay somewhere unique.

F65 Media support

It was great to have the banners, flyers, etc. with the help of Foundation65. I would not have thought of all of that on my own.

Lesson learned

I was the last presentation on their last day in town for 2 authors. One told me he had run out of steam and the other was in a hurry to leave. I'd make sure I wasn't last on the schedule twice!

Family Event as an option

It was nice to be able to refer students and families to the Family Event to see other authors, buy books and get them signed - especially if their grade wasn't seeing a particular author (e.g., 4th/5th for Harrington and 3rd/5th for Lin)

Agreement expectations

It seemed that there were different expectations about financials/paperwork for the authors. It might be good to set a standard boilerplate that the contacts could work off of early on.

Broader Support

I think it would have been great to see upper administration really embrace the visit by sending out a supportive email to all staff to enjoy books, plan activities around the visit - and take some time off from something else (i.e. another literacy activity) and enjoy this instead.

Space

Students had to sit in the balcony at Nichols and Haven. Was it too many students per presentation? How do we accommodate all students at the middle school level without it getting too overwhelming?

Overall To Do list for everyone

It would be great to have one "to do" list that everyone follows. I think it would really help people who have not hosted author visits before

K-8 Experience

The K-8 author experience was very exciting and unifying but it was MUCH too much to coordinate for one librarian.

Bussing Students

Bussing students was a very big challenge. Teachers lost their preps. Student lunches needed to be rescheduled. This put a dark cloud on the MS event for many involved.

Collaboration

For an event of this size, it would great to see the titles integrated into the grade level curriculum at a district level.

Visiting Schools

Author Invasion=Reading Explosion

Ever since the Fabulous Five visited District 65, I have seen a surge in library visits, inquiries and checkouts. Matt de la Pena's books cannot stay on the shelf; there are multiple holds on each of his titles! My students see history in a whole new way because of Steve Sheinkin. We have had so much fun examining the real-life events that he writes about in his books. This has been a great experience for us all!
