My grandmother's mother was born in Elazığ into an ambassdor's family. Her father was appointed to Istanbul after his duty in Mosul. Just before his move, his wife died of pneumonia. Within that year, he met a Greek lady during his duty and quit the military as members of the army could not marry a non-Muslim. He left my grandmother's mother to be raised by her grandmother who was actually a poet in Elazığ.

My father's side on the other hand is from Greece. They moved back to Turkey during the exchange between Turkey and Greece. They moved into a village in Sakarya before they finally moved back to Istanbul.

It's quite strange that they all have blond hair and blue eyes unlike my brother and I.

My great grandfather was born during a wartime. Almost every men in my mother's family were send to fight but none of them survived. So the women of my family moved to a cave after a home invasion. At that time my great grandfather, who is my mother's grandfather, was not even 2 years old. Later on after many years he established a small village and continued his life.

My father's mother was the daughter of the chief, still they were really poor. Before she married my grandfather, there was a man who wanted to marry her. However, she was in love with my grandfather so she chased the guy with a roller. And then they got married.

My grandmother says that when my father was 2-3 months old, he started trembling his head for some reason. My father kept doing that for days, so they decided to take him to a doctor. Of course they don't have a real doctor in the village, so they took him to the dede (in the meaning of a religious figure) in the village. Dede gave my grandmother a rock or something like that and told her to place it to the river and go back to house, without looking at her back. After that, the trembling in my father's head was gone. (I personally don't believe this)

Later some time a family friend came to Kayseri and said that Eskişehir was more civilised and better in terms of weather. That family friend, influenced younger generation of my family at that time and they insisted to my grand mothers granddad to move to Eskişehir. When he found out that he had used it up on a car, he went into a complete rage and chased my grandfather around the village with a rifle screaming "I'm gonna kill him, I'm gonna kill him". My mother remembers it as one of the most traumatic events of her life but overtime it just came to be something they laughed about. The village was in Pazar, east of Rize where a large Laz speaking community lived. My great grand father was fluent but didn't really pass it on to his descendants, because most Laz people preferred to assimilate into the Turkish population in those days.
