The elite class of landowners, government officials, and leading thinkers in the United States propagated false narratives (lies) about Black people--characterizing them as a sub-human, uncivilized "species" only fit to serve as slaves. Religion was also used as a tool to convince the masses of people that Black people were inferior, and that it was the "will of God" for them to be slaves, and for White people to be their masters. Ultimately, the goal was to provide a justification for the exploitation of Black people for the sake of economic gain for the elite class of landowners in the United States. Not only did these ideas about race become deeply ingrained in the minds of American people, but they were also embedded in the design of our country's social, political, and economic institutions. To this day, racism continues to inform the ways that institutions function in our country.
