Joana is a woman who ran away from her home town Lithuania. She's very brave and helps people who are in need of help. She finds a little boy and lets him stay with her instead of telling him to leave. Joana stumbles across the shoe maker and he tells her that the woman she found dead on the road was killed by her poorly made shoes. Joana lost her family during the war so she has no one. Joana, Florian, and Emilia all were together and Joana was helping Florian with his scrapped leg. She tells Florian that she is a murderer.

Florian is a young Prussian soldier. He is being hunted from both the Nazis and the Soviets, but he is too hurt to keep running. He is carrying a pistol and a secret on his back. He saved a little girl from a Russian soldier that was trying to kill her. The little girl was named Emilia and she was all by her self, he wanted to leave her but he said she reminded him of his sister so he let her come with.

Emilia is a 15 year old polish girl that was hiding from Russian soldiers. She's always questioning herself and everything she does. She's wearing a pink woolen hat and a coat that ties around her neck. A German soldier saves her by shooting a Russian soldier off her. Emilia always talks about her mom. "he said. safer? He didn't realize. I was already dead."

Alfred is a 17 year old German sailor soldier that wants to be like Hitler. He's a very scared soldier that always hides in the supply closet. Alfred really loves attention and always talks about the things he's done, he "writes" these letters to his lover named Hannelore, he tells her that he saved a girl that was very pretty and smelt like fresh eggs. He's a soldier that gets bullied by the other soldier but also was bullied by his own father but his mother always babied him. He is always telling Hannelore how brave he is and that good things are happening like him getting promoted but in reality he's a lair and a coward. He tells Hannelore that he could see her eating her breakfast through a window everyday before she goes off to school.
