My Favourite Female Character by Dave Sproull

My favourite female character is Joyce Byers, specifically Winona Ryder's portrayal of the character in the first season of the series.
In recent years there has been a move away from the female character as the classic 'damsel in distress' and yet in many ways these often hard hitting katana swinging characters often just ape previously established male tropes, or simply have abilities far beyond any human regardless of gender.
Joyce is not a chosen vampire slayer like Buffy Sommers or genetically modified to be a unstoppable killing machine like Firefly's River Tam.
Instead, Joyce is just a normal woman and is utterly terrified by the mind bendingly weird supernatural events that have visited her house and have taken her son from her.
She is terrified, and yet faces her fears, and confronts the dangers and the dark unknowns that threaten. That is, for any of us , the hallmark of bravery.

[Photo used from official Stranger Things FaceBook page]
