Liesel goes to a Hitler Youth Academy in the fictional city of Molching where she is constantly taught about Hitler and all that jazz. She is 9 at the beginning of the story. Then, she meets Max who moves in with her family to escape prosecution. Yet after, everyone she knows dies except for Max in a bombing of her street.

My favourite part of this book is when Rosa came to Liesel's school. She then asked for some private time with Liesel and screamed at her loudly and then quietly whispered to Liesel that Max was awake. She gave Liesel a toy that Max told her to. Liesel thanked Rosa and then when Rosa left and Liesel came back in the class, she called Rosa 'stupid cow' for screaming at her. She got a slap from her teacher for that one.
