My First Phone

My first phone was a hand-me-down from my Mam; A T-Mobile, bright pink, slide phone. For the first few months of having the phone I didn't even have a sim card- I only used it to play games and mess around with the keyboard. However, when I was 10, I was allowed a sim card so I could message my parents and family to let them know I was safe. Looking back, I can see how much (smart)phones have evolved. They now have a touchscreen keyboards, downloadable apps, and high quality cameras such as the newest IPhone. I'm glad I got some freedom away from a device whilst I was a child, but even still, I think it would be difficult to live without a phone now.

YouTube is an online platform where videos can be shared. Creators can gain 'subscribers' and money from doing so. YouTube played a large role in my growing up stage. In 2013/14 my favourite 'YouTubers' were 'Zoella' and 'ThatcherJoe'. I bought their merchandise and watched their videos 'religiously'. Zoella in particular, gained over 11 million subscribers (Trackalytics) and I viewed her as a role-model, as many tweens did. I used to make short videos myself such as 'Hauls' when I was 10/11 - but didn't post them online. Even now I still watch YouTube videos but my choices of videos are different.

Madness are an English Ska Band, formed in the late 1970's. They are my Dad's and Uncle's favourite band and so I got to see them live at Newcastle racecourse in 2014. They were never my favourite but I still enjoyed their music, and we listened to it in the car on my Dad's CD regularly. I appreciated getting to go and it was an enjoyable experience, there was no screaming as all of the audience were over 40 but the atmosphere was still positive. My Dad bought a Fez at their merchandise stall and I got to wear it the whole duration of the show.

The Manchester Arena Bombing occurred on the 22nd May 2017 at an Ariana Grande concert. It was found to be a terrorist act, leaving 22 people dead (BBC News) . For me, this is quite a memorable time as it was the first act of terrorism in the UK that I had been alive for and heard about all over the news moments after it occurred. Although I didn't live in Manchester, I still felt scared and worried about what happened. However, two weeks after on the 4th June One Love was created. An outdoor concert in Manchester created by Grande, which gathered music artists together to support Manchester. Almost everyone I knew, and myself, watched it from home and posted about it on social media.

One direction (1D) were known as the 'Biggest boyband in the world' in the 2010's. The band includes Liam, Zayn, Niall, Louis and Harry. They created five studio albums and first found fame on the popular singing talent show; The X Factor. I was in primary school during the time that One direction were formed and they were the talk of the playground. Me and My best friend would always sing to their songs during breaktime and choreograph short dances and perform them on the mini stage. 1D were a large part of my childhood, I had posters on my bedroom walls, Cd's and even a Niall Build-A-Bear which had a plush guitar. Even now, I still listen to their songs, which I feel are much more relatable and heartfelt now that im older. I was distraught when they announced their hiatus.

H2O Just Add Water

H2O is an Australian show based around the story of three girls, Cleo, Emma and Ricky, becoming mermaids and hiding their secret. As a tween, I watched this whenever it was on TV - even though we didn't have Sky Channels. I was immersed in the show, and loved the magic elements and features. I recently binge-watched the series again in 2020 during lock-down, and whilst a little bit cringey, it still holds the same distinct feeling it did when I was younger.

Netflix- Lucifer

Netflix has thousands of Movies and TV series for everyone to watch. However, my favourite is 'Lucifer'. Lucifer is an American crime/fantasy show based on characters written by Neil Gaiman. There are 6 seasons altogether, with 93 episodes. I started watching in 2020 during lock-down and even have tattoos inspired by the show that not only reflect the series, but also hold personal meaning to me. The show has evolved since 2016, where it was first broadcast on FOX. However, after season 3, the media company cancelled the series. That was until the hashtag #SaveLucifer arose and fans from all over the world began tweeting, hoping for the show to be revived after one of the biggest cliffhangers yet. Shortly after, Netflix picked the show up and have since created 3 more seasons.
Twitter is also a place where fans feel that they can express themselves and tweet about the show. Personally, I made a few internet friends that I could talk to about the story-lines, characters and trailers. However, before 2020, I had never used Netflix before and so there were many programmes that were popular that I missed out on watching. Since immersing myself in the 'Netflix world', I have been able to discover new films ans programmes to watch which have shortly become some of my favourites.

My first tablet was the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 which I used to watch Youtube and play games such as 'Bad Piggies'. It was a way to connect with my Maltese family abroad via Facebook and Messenger, as well as video call my friends after school. I also used it to create Pic-collages of me and my friends whenever we had a sleepover. Tablets aren't as popular now, however, my nieces and nephews all have a tablet each to watch Peppa Pig and YouTube but they are aged 2-8. Ipads are more popular with my friends who are artistic and creative to complete online artwork. Rather than a tablet, I have a Chromebook which is more useful to me now as I can complete my work as well as using streaming platforms or listening to music. It also came in very handy for family quiz nights during 2020. I think that devices such as laptops and tablets were vital for people across the world during 2020 and helped us connect with each other especially for keeping in touch with my grandparents as it was difficult for them to cope.
