The author allows the readers to see Charlies journey of maturity and growth - at the beginning of the book Charlie shows how dependent he is towards his family, and how sheltered he is from the world with his lack of real life experience not only of the world but also reality. Throughout the book the reader slowly starts to see Charlies personal growth, and how he is slowly becoming more independent and self reliant. Charlie starts to reflect about the real world and ask question why, why do these thing happen?, why do people do these horrible things? At the end of the book the personal growth of Charlie is obvious and it feels to the reader like a full circle moment.

Racism and Prejudice

The story shows us the destructive effects of racism and prejudice through Jeffery Lu, a Vietnamese boy, and Jasper Jones, an Indigenous Australian who is unfairly scapegoated and marginalized by the town of Corrigan. The novel challenges readers to reflect on how societal biases and stereotypes harm individuals and communities. For example, throughout the novel, we see Jasper trying to escape from the blame for Laura's death, although he has nothing to do with it. Even at the end, when he runs away from Corrigan, he is still scapegoated for more problems, and being blamed for the Whisharts' house being burnt down. Jeffery Lu, who has nothing to do with the Vietnam War, was discriminated against just because of his ethnicity which was out of his control. This shows the themes of prejudice and discrimination against Jasper, Jeffery, and other minorities.

The author wants us to understand that evil can be disguised, by showcasing how various characters are treated in the novel. For example, Laura and Eliza's dad is the towns mayor, a pillar in the community. But underneath this, he abuses his own daughter. This gives us insight into how people in positions of power are not always morally correct and that evil can be disguised.

It also helps us to understand the importance of standing up for justice. Eliza was silent when her sister was being abused and her death, and never said a word about it to anyone. This can also be related to Sylvia Likens, as her sister Jenny never spoke about her sisters abuse. Both Jenny and Eliza never stood up and told anyone, and both ended up losing their loved ones. Being too scared to speak up can end up making a part of the injustice, and sheds light on how important it is to stick up for what's right.

- Sophie and Vridhi

Craig Silvey's intention with the novel was most likely to make the reader think and compare to our current times, mostly in relation to racism in rural areas. Craig's inclusion of an indigenous character who faces racism helps the reader understand what it was like to be indigenous back in the 60's.

perception vs reality

This novel has a repeated theme of perception vs reality whether it's for good or for worse. For example, the town's perception of Jasper Jones is very negative. He's seen as the despicable kid of the town. Whenever there's been a crime or wrong doing, people automatically assume Jasper had something to do with it even though there would be no evidence to suggest he did. However as we learn from Charlie's time with Jasper, that perception couldn't be any further from reality. The only reason he is seen as the scapegoat is because of the racist Ideology of Corragin. There are many other instances of this idea of perception vs reality in the novel. I think the reason why the author put this repeated idea in was for us to think about it in the real world where you shouldn't base your reality from rumours and stereotypes.

L.B

Reflection of Jasper Jones

Craig Silvey wants us to reflect on our subconscious and biased ideas. We see this many times throughout the novel with how Corrigan thinks of Jasper because of his race and upbringing. The author wants us to criticizes our society and the way that we treat people we consider different because of stereotypes and mindsets that were built over time and normalized.

The author also wants us to reflect deeply on knowing and understanding the difference between on the perception of something and the actual reality. People with more power and privilege are able to influence the majority when people give up on individual thinking. This is shown by the author as the main antagonist of the novel is Laura Wishart's father, the mayor, someone with a lot of power in Corrigan that is still treated with respect despite his cruel actions.

Since Corrigan is a small rural town, it is away from the big city and the more abstract ideas it holds, subjugating Corrigan to the town with closed-minded thinking. Since there are fewer people, everyone's ideas are mainly the same because it's easier to plant the seed of influence in a small backward town. They won't deviate from the town's collective ideas and thinking to avoid being singled out and shunned, so they stick with the majority and won't stand up for what's right in times of heavy injustice. The story is set in the 60s, which further amplifies Corrigan's insular thinking. Craig Silvey gives us insights into what it was like to be a person of color back in the 60s, which involved heavy discrimination, persecution, and judgment, shown through characters like Jasper and Mrs Lu. The town had created a fake perception of Jasper to single him out and use him as the scapegoat, while Mrs Lu was verbally and physically attacked by a woman who'd lost her husband in the Vietnam War that Mrs Lu had no hand in. No one helped them because to speak out against Corrigan's community means facing persecution for yourself. Both these attacks against people of color would have been very common back in the day and no one would've come to their defense.
