Patriarchy means a system where men have more power and importance than women. This system creates unfair differences between boys and girls in education, both in our own countries and around the world.

Patriarchy makes people think that boys are better than girls at certain things, so girls don't get the same chances. Sometimes, girls can even be scared to go to school because of bad treatment or violence.

Around the world, in some places, traditions and beliefs influenced by patriarchy stop girls from going to school. Sometimes, families have very little money, and they choose to send their sons to school instead of their daughters. Also, there might not be many women in important jobs or schools, so girls don't see role models who look like them. For example, according to the reading "Barriers to Girls' Education, Strategies and Interventions" many girls don't go to school because they were taught to stay home and become home-makers instead. Families were also too poor to send both kids to school, so they will only send out the boys of the family. We need to change how people think about girls and boys. We also need to make sure that girls can go to school without being scared or treated badly. This will help make education fair for everyone, no matter their gender.

Gender is the social, psychological, cultural and behavioral aspects of being a man, woman, or other gender identity. Patriarchy is a social system in which positions of dominance and privilege are primarily held by men. Sexuality is about your sexual feelings, thoughts, attractions and behaviors towards other people. It matters in education because in a lot of countries and the states boys are valued for their ability to protect and provide, while girls are valued for sexual, reproductive, and domestic labor. Patriarchy and its relationship towards gender, and sexuality in education are as seen through hyper heterosexuality, gender norms and roles, and the invisible curriculum. Patriarchy a system of society or government in which men hold the power and women are largely excluded from it, however it does not stop there, as it affects race and sexuality. It affects education through the invisible curriculum that educators, family, and administrators actively participate in either knowing or unknowing. The invisible curriculum is seen through making heterosexuality a norm within schools, literature, media, and gender norms and roles. Deviating from the norm of heterosexuality is looked down upon, and those who do not conform can often lead to become victims of discrimination and bullying. Education enforces this ideology, by restructuring children's education to follow gender norms. As a female must act feminine and a male act masculine. This adds to the stereotype that certain professional fields can only be accessed by a specific gender. Limiting opportunities for women who want to perceive, "male dominated fields." This is further reiterated through heterosexual literature taught in schools, for example Romeo and Juliet. The curriculum is managed by both educators and Ministers of Education to showcase what is important to pass down to future citizens, in many cases this excludes having positive gay role models, literature, and educational resources for students who identify being gay. In schools, educators are often fired for identifying as gay to further the incentive of hyper heterosexuality. Overall, there is a censorship of both greater understanding and education of sexuality that inhibits growth of the community. Patriarchy is a system where the world is organized by ideas about gender. Patriarchy "says" that men are in charge and women should follow suit and do what men want to do. Essentially, men have the power. How patriarchy creates gendered inequalities in education is it leads to reinforcing stereotypes in the classrooms. Girls aren't offered the same opportunities as the boys in the classroom. For example, in some schools there's only a boys basketball team. From ancient roman mythology to the start of the American president system and so forth. Patriarchy is the superiority of Man over Woman. Patriarchy is so deeply rooted in our society that even our educational system perpetuates and sustains patriarchy.

When kids are in school, they are constantly being grouped off gender such as being separated in two different lines or two different groups during activities. It was constantly a "boy vs girl" theme throughout our educational system. Even the job positions held by the different genders at school. The cafeteria staff are often referred to as "lunch-lady" and the PE teachers are often male. These instances are what gives birth to these gender roles and stereotypes that perpetuate the patriarchy.

When I think of patriarchy and the institution of gender and sexuality, I think of an unbalanced scale. It's what history has designed us to believe. How and what roles woman and men should have and be in. From the end of time men were put on the thrown as the head of the household and the woman carried out the family load part of it and supported their men but not as an equal but right underneath them. The education system is no different they have kids believing certain thing are for boys while other things are for girls. Look at how they set up sports. They put boys and girls in categories by their sex. Boys should play football and girls should be their cheerleaders or girls should play volleyball with boys should play soccer. Patriarchy is a major factor in how society is run both in the US and in most other places around the world. However, the issue of gender is not the only contributing factor to disparities that are recognized in and out of schools. There is an intersectionality between race, gender, sexuality, and even social class. There is a certain level of privilege or lack thereof for each intersectionality that is added to your circumstances. For example, a white woman would be less privileged than a white man, while simultaneously being more privileged than a black woman. It goes deeper because a heterosexual CIS Black woman would then also have more privilege than a Trans Black Woman. This can be seen in education because these privileges and stereotypes that come with each factor of one's identity influence the treatment and/or punishments received in schools. After all, minorities, especially black boys are disproportionately suspended or expelled from schools. It also affects the access to resources that people deem one is worthy of and what they are expected to contribute to society overall.

We can see how patriarchy affects education in our own experiences and worldwide. Throughout history, women's education has been limited due to social norms and expectations. Women and girls are meant to be in the home. Today, many young girls miss school when they are on their menstrual cycle as they are now seen as "unclean". Even if they are not seen as unclean, many cannot attend school because they cannot access proper sanitary products. In the United States, we often see young girls lose interest in subjects relating to STEM, and we see boys remain in those activities and subjects. This directly translates to what the STEM field looks like today. Lack of opportunity due to patriarchy in schools directly leads to lack of opportunity in the job market for women.
When gender inequalities are present in education, it perpetuates patriarchy. Creating inequalities restricts knowledge and makes one gender (males) have more access to opportunities and resources than another gender. Through gender inequality, we see a lack of representation in leadership roles, making those of the opposite gender feel as though they cannot amount to as much as the other gender.
Patriarchy is what holds men up and other genders down in our society. A straight, white, male has the best chance of rising the ladder in leadership roles compared to anyone else. Intersectionalities and varying identities inhibit people from achieving goals due to the societal structure of patriarchy. This matters in education because it begins in preschool; When the little white boy is called on more often than the little black boy next to him; when a little black boy is quicker to be suspended or blamed for a squabble in a classroom before his white counterpart. Patriarchy puts the straight white man on a pedestal and creates glass ceilings for everyone else to reach.

The relationship between gender and a patriarchal school system is very important for the the development of the children. For example girls in kindergarten are thought that girls wear pink and boys wear blue. Even with color gender is assigned to them. That also includes sports and classes that kids take. One example would be art classes and dance classes and even cheerleading classes, those are stereotype for girls to take and then the hard sports like soccer, swimming classes and football are for boys to take. Then kids grow up thinking that everything in life has an assigned general to what girls and what boys can learn, or use in a real world. When you see a girl as a CEO for a big company people are confused because they are used to seeing a white male figure that power of position. Gender inequality is created within the Patriachy ideals in education. The reason I stand with this assumption is that not all states follow inequalities within genders. Sports may be bigger in big hometown states in the south but their focus is more on males giving them opportunities to go into good colleges because of their sportsmanship whereas girls are more involved in clubs. Staff within in the schools for instance... school counselor is more commonly a female. ELA teachers are often female. Lunch staff are usually women as well. Then when we focus on sports the gym teacher would be known as male.

We can link it to gendered inequalities within the educational system. I feel like schools sustain patriarchy by also making teachers fall into sustaining it inside and outside the classroom. Growing up, everything was gendered, even the staff. Seeing things like this keeps patriarchy as something that is the norm, and that society should accept it. Male students would get the advantage of getting attention from teacher while girls had to stay quiet and listen.
