Modern Slavery Project - Sepideh Parsa & Chandima Hettiarachchi

Chandima and I have started working on a new project with a group of colleagues and researchers from MLO, Law and Politics, a research centre from UCL and anti-slavery NGOs. We have been awarded about £5,000 (HEIF) to complete the project by July 2023.

The projects aims at setting up the first training framework for local authorities to identify and prevent modern slavery in their regions and at the bottom end of supply chains. We are at the initial stages of the project. Chandima and I are currently conducting a pilot examination of Modern Slavery statements and once this is done, we will invite our team members to participate in evaluating some of the statements to help them understand what council report on. This should give us sufficient grounding to devise our research tools for other stages. We are aiming to recruit a research assistance who has lived experience of slavery and s/he will help us with our interviews.

During Induction Week, first-year Accounting students had the exciting opportunity to visit the historic Bank of England. The trip offered an inside look into the institution's pivotal role in the UK economy, from setting interest rates to managing currency. Students explored exhibitions, learned about the evolution of money, and even had the chance to pick up a gold bar weighing around 13kg —an inspiring start to their journey in the world of finance!

At Middlesex University Tax and Accounting Clinic (MDXTAC), we’re dedicated to embedding practical experience into learning. We constantly discuss AI in our curriculum, but why stop there? 🤖

By using AI embedded accounting software, we’re seeing first-hand how technology is reshaping the field – from automating account reconciliations and recording expenses to simplified mileage tracking. It’s not just theory; it’s transformative practice!

For one of our recent projects, we’ve assigned a student to work directly with a local business, applying AI-powered accounting software to solve real-world financial challenges. This hands-on experience not only strengthens their skills but also demonstrates the real impact of AI in transforming accounting practices.

At MDXTAC, our student volunteers work under the supervision of experienced chartered accountants, ensuring they gain invaluable insights and professional guidance. This mentorship provides students with a unique opportunity to bridge theory with real-world application.

This model has been shaped by students and staff, and brought to life through the AFE Social Club — a space designed to support connection, inclusion, and wellbeing alongside academic life.

Rather than seeing wellbeing and success as separate, the model recognises them as mutually reinforcing. When students feel they belong and are supported, they engage more confidently , and that confidence feeds directly into both wellbeing and academic outcomes.

Congratulations to our colleague Dr. Ericka Rascon on this new publication in the European Journal of Political Research exploring how democratic messages can be framed under electoral authoritarianism.

Drawing on large-scale experimental evidence from Turkey, the study offers important insights into democracy promotion, political communication, and how positive framing may be more effective in shaping democratic attitudes.
