The<em> Tribune, </em>edited by Horace greeley, supported reform efforts and attempted to educate and uplift its readers. The <em>Sun </em>contained sensational accounts of murders, scandals, and other lurid events to appeal to the baser taste of readers.          <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Abolitionism</strong>- The movement to end slavery.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div><strong>William Loyd Garrison</strong>- The most important abolitionist leader, he launched a newspaper, the Liberator, dedicated to attacking the moral evil of slavery.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Nat Turner</strong>- In 1831, he led a slave rebellion in Southhampton County, Virginia. Some 60 whites and 100 blacks died in the rebellion.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Fredrick Douglas</strong>- A brilliant man who was a radical. He stated “ Slave holders not only forfeit their right to liberty but to life itself.”&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Harriet Tubman</strong>- Spoke at antislavery meetings and also made some twenty tripsm to the south to help lead more than 300 blacks to freedom.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Horace Mann</strong>- One of the leading reformers in the drive for public education and was also the Massachusetts Board of Education, Mann also brought a crusader’s zeal&nbsp; to the task. He believed that people could find deliverance from ignorance and social problems through sound moral education.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div><strong>William H. McGruffy</strong>- Also a public education leader and a Christian who also realized its potential for the gospel.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Prohibition</strong>- Banning, of the sell and consumption of alcohol.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Seneca Falls Convention</strong>- Convention held by women in 1848, in Seneca Falls, New York, in which they passed resolutions calling for equal rights for women, such as the right to vote.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Utopian Reformers</strong>- The Utopian reformers wanted to have small perfect communities that would serve as models for the reform of society at large. Some of which operated as religious purposes.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>
