The first two chapters of this particular book makes Willie Dunne's childhood a reminiscent memory of something he values with it's flaws, for instance he values the memory of his mother even though she died at a young age. He even gets a love interest early on in the book, thus setting the mood for problems and life events to come.

In the second chapter Willie is slowly but surely introduced to the idea and combat of war, he only starts fearing war by the end of the chapter which contrasts to the previous patriotic mentioned stories he read with his father.

The first two chapters of this book focus on the war hardened soldiers regardless of age on the German side of the war. The first chapter actually has a argument scene in between the chef and the lieutenant over food rations hence the GIF above of the lieutenant screaming at the soldier, it depicts the idea of the scene quite well. The second chapter also finds relevance with the GIF above as the main character Paul mentions that their drill sergeant took away all the romance the army ever held for them by his constant vocal assaults'. However this chapter took a quick turn to the realities of war as one of Paul's friends shortly die afterwards due to his leg being amputated even when begging for help he returned to his friend already dead and then he proceeds to untie his tag and clear his belongings.
