Fellow classmate, Josh Menzies, made it to the American Idol finalists last week (February 11, 2017). Menzies auditioned in Atlanta, Georgia, the city that finalist auditions were hosted in this season of American Idol. Around Apex, Menzies is known as the school’s top singer, winning many awards, and he practices 2-3 hours a day. According to paywizard.org, the grand-prize winner of American Idol will be given a major record deal for up to six albums. Menzies will compete against four other American Idol finalists in four weeks in Los Angeles, California for this prize.      Menzies' goal is to be a Broadway star, and in a statement from the New York Film Academy, Broadway actors make at least $1754 a week. If he wins, he will sign for a Broadway cover album. Students.expression.edu says that there are many pros to signing a record contract with a large recording company. This means he will get lots of funding, connections to many people in the the acting/singing business, and recognition. It is likely that Menzies will make at least $100,000 in his first year if he wins. Menzies says he will donate part of his salary to arts programs across the country and a particularly large amount to Apex High. 

 

            Menzies parents spoke to us about his relevance within Apex High’s art community. Menzies has participated in every spring musical since his freshman year, and now a senior, Menzies has the lead in this year’s musical Les Miserables. His parents told us that Menzies has applied and amazingly got into Julliard’s choral program, where he plans to get a Bachelor’s degree in choral arts.
