A calorie is a unit of measurement for the energy consumed through our food and nutritious sources. It is typically shown on the packaging of different items of food near the kJ level (kilo joule - energy the food contains and an give to you). Typically one must ingest an average of 2000 calories per day, but this is around adulthood and increases through adolescence and childhood, where the calorie requirement is lower. Different people need different amounts of calories in different conditions.

In biology there is the equation to find how many calories there are in something.

Allergy = an immune response to exposure of a substance that it has become sensitive to. This substance isn't necessarily harmful, but the body's immune system thinks it is.

If symptoms are potentially fatal, the person enters anaphylaxis.

Sensitivity or hypersensitivity to a substance is when the body is quick to react to that substance's exposure. If the body does this, it is most likely allergic to it.

Ingestion of a substance that the body is intolerant to can cause adverse effects, but will not induce an immune response. As such, symptoms may take longer to become noticeable. Note that if the body is intolerant to something, it isn't necessarily allergic or sensitive to it. Eg. you can be lactose intolerant and get diarrhoea because of the body's inability/reduced ability to digest lactose - but not get hives or swelling of the lips and throat (symptoms of a milk allergy).

When someone is allergic this means they receive an allergy from when their body reacts with an allergen in the environment. This is a negative reaction that can lead to small effects and mild rashes all the way to more serious, life-threatening conditions. An example of a potentially life threatening allergic reaction is an anaphylactic one, where the person can be sent into anaphylactic shock. This is when a condition called anaphylaxis is present and it is a hypersensitivity reaction that involves. If someone is intolerant to a food or medicine it means that they cannot have that without adverse effects, these effects could be similar to those of an allergic reaction, linking these two terms together. Sensitivity is a close term with all of them as it is a term expressing the state of something being easily damaged, injured or distressed by slight changes, in this case eating or ingesting something that they are intolerant to, that could lead to an allergic reaction or a state of anaphylaxis or anaphylatic shock. The main contrasting difference between the terms is that they express similar things in different magnitudes but also in different degrees of specificity. Anaphylaxis is a specific condition which can be a result of someone being allergic to something else. Sensitivity is the state of being or having an organ that is very easily stressed or changed by slight changes such as eating something one is intolerant to.

Allergies are your immune system's response to foreign substances in the body (these are called allergens and they aren't typically harmful). The body attacks these allergens which can result in sneezing, swelling and inflammation among others. Allergies can be life-threatening, they usually come on suddenly after being triggered by a small amount of the allergen.

In severe cases, allergies can cause anaphylaxis. When someone is sent into anaphylactic shock, this is a life-treating reaction to an allergen that can cause difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness and lightheadedness.

Unlike allergies, intolerance is not life-threatening. Intolerance means you lack certain enzymes needed to breakdown and absorb certain elements in food. Whilst a food allergy happens when your immune system mistakes something in food as harmful and attacks it but when a food irritates your stomach or your body can't properly digest it, that’s an intolerance.

Sensitivity is someone's physical response to a certain food, beverage, or ingredient. The symptoms can include only digestive problems (ex. abdominal pain, bloating, and gas)

The energy balance equation is the relationship between the energy consumed – measured in calories and the energy expended – also measured in calories. Maintaining a healthy weight requires a balance between energy in and energy out. Too much energy in or too little energy out leads to excess energy being stored as fat. Too little energy in or too much energy out leads to weight loss. Typically, men require 2,500 Kcal per day and women 2,000 Kcal but these general values are affected by four main factors:

age – in general, adults consume more than children but calorie consumption declines in later life

gender – in general, men consume more than women

height – the taller the person, the more that person will need to consume

energy expenditure – the more active a person is, the more calories are required to maintain weight
