Inquiry Based Learning vs. Discovery Based Learning

In mathematics class, discovery based learned can be useful - but to an extent. It would be unrealistic and unfair to think that students should be able to formulae answers on their own without any direction from the teacher. Inquiry-based learning should promote investigation, discovery, and challenge students with open-ended questions, but it must also be structured in a way where students are provided with scenarios or possible formulas where they can experiment and collaborate with others.

A classroom which encompasses the idea of teaching critical thinking through the curriculum, gives room for students to extend their thinking and engage in discussions and debates which would further create more questions. Critical thinking shouldn't be thought of as a skill we teach our students but a way through which our students learn and nurture. In that sense, students will in return know why they're learning what they're learning and how they will apply it in real life in real situations.
