Ancient times

The area known today as Romania was initially colonized by a people known as the Dacians. The Dacians formed a significant empire that reached its peak in the first century BCE, and in fact many evidence of their structures and culture scattered throughout Romania can still be found. The reason why you've probably never heard of the Dacians is similar to why you have not heard of many small civilizations over the years: because the Roman Empire has marched around 106 CE and conquered them!

Unlike some areas conquered by the Romans, however, Romania was in an advantageous location, rich in gold deposits and geographically located along the trade routes and close (or in) to the Balkan Peninsula. As a result, something happened in Romania that did not happen in many other areas: it became heavily Latinized while the Romans moved, establishing cities, building roads and importing Roman culture. Rome's hegemony over Romania lasts only about two hundred years, but in those centuries it had an incredible impact on people and the country.

When Rome withdrew from the area, Hungarians and German tribes moved, and the area developed into three main principalities: Romania, Wallachia and Moldavia. The Ottoman Empire conquered the area in the fifteenth century. A century later the territories were briefly united in one country - but it did not last long. Finally, in the 17th century, a nationalist movement swept Romania and was again united, emerging as the modern country we recognize today, although it includes Moldova as part of its territory.

Modern Romania

During the Second World War, Romania was one of many countries to have the misfortune of being liberated by the Nazis from the Soviet Union, which made Romania emerge as a communist nation. From 1947 to 1989, Romania was ruled by two communist dictators who incur immeasurable damage to Romania's culture and economy. Where once there had been a stable nation, soon there was a shell of a country.

Romania has once again found true independence after the fall of the Soviet Union and has since made great progress in economic recovery, even if its damaged national culture preserves the scars of the communist years. Today Romania is a rapidly growing member of the European Union.

Brand dishes
The traditional Romanian dishes are characterized by meat, but usually also include vegetables or fruit. The cabbage rolls (called sarmale), stuffed with spicy pork and rice, are so traditional that they are considered the national dish of Romania and are a favorite main dish. Sausages and stews (like tocanita) are also high on the list of common meals for dinner. The muschi poiana consists of beef with mushrooms and bacon in a vegetable puree and tomato sauce. You can also sample traditional Romanian fish dishes, such as the salam and grilled carp called s awamura.
Soups, appetizers and side dishes
Soups, made with or without meat or prepared with fish, are a common element in the menus of Romanian restaurants and are almost always the main course of the main meal.

Zama is a green bean soup with chicken, parsley and dill. Other desserts are better described as Danish; they are pastries with cheese stuffing.

Crepes with various fillings and toppings are also found in the typical Romanian dessert menu. Papanasi, which is a Romanian specialty, features fried pasta, ricotta, jam and cream.

Dishes for the holidays
As in other Eastern European countries, the Romanian people celebrate holidays with special dishes. For example, during Christmas, a pig could be slaughtered and fresh meat used to prepare dishes with bacon, sausage and black pudding. Even the pig's organs are eaten. At Easter, a cake (pasca) with a sweetened cheese is traditionally served.
