 Make book talk sign-up sheet for teachers in lounge, book talk new books to classrooms. 

Be apart of the book fairs- make sure there are quality titles there, use Scholastic points to buy quality titles for our library. (hold a BOGO fair at the end of school year to promote summer reading)

The most successful summer reading programs are putting books in the hands of the children before summer. 

This can be accomplished for as low as $75/ child and research shows it is effective 

Books in the classrooms should consist of the following: diversity, currency, organization, quantity. 

Two levels below, two levels above, 300-600 books.

Staff fills out 2 or 3 postcards each week about their students to recognize AFOOFA or academic growth. These postcards were then sent home weekly to parents. 

By the end of the school year, every student in the entire school has received at least one postcard.

Every Tuesday, principal holds an assembly for either K/1, 2/3, or 4/5. This means that every third week these teachers get extra time to meet/ plan. 

The assembly is a way for the principal to connect with the students in these grades about a variety of things. 

It is 40 minutes long- the principal could read a book, book talk, show a video, Cha Cha Slide, You Tube- Kid President, Emily Arrow songs. 

This assembly really established a positive relationship between students and principal. 

Teachers appreciate the extra time and feel valued by admin.

Students who are selected for summer school are invited to a literacy event before the end of the school year. 

There are giveaways and free food (pizza)

Students pick out a bag of books ahead of time and then take them home that day and share the books they are receiving with parents. 

Students also pick out boardgames they can play with older siblings/ family members like Headbanz or Scrabble.

School hosts lock-ins to raise money for books, etc. Parents drop students off.

Six a year, held after school from 3:30-6:30 or 6:00-9:00. 

Kids pay $10 and pay $1 for snacks while there. 

Fun rooms- Lego room, pokemon, movie room, mine craft, crafts, gameboard, sports. 

On average, school made $2,500 each lock-in.
