"Going up the Mountain," written by Trevor Shikaze, is an exciting story about the harsh reality of today's society. The story is about the narrator's conflicting quest to climb the mountain located in the middle of her utopian town. The story is written from the second point of view. The protagonist consistently questions her task to climb the mountain; however, the task is always overlooked by excuses. We discover that everyone in this utopian town also discusses and debates climbing the mountain, but no one makes the time to complete this goal. The story presents a popular reality television show of the daily lives and interactions of everyone living in the town; however, the show is modified and edited to remove all boring information and anything concerning the mountain. The story "Going up the Mountain" is an intriguing story that illustrates to the audience our reflection of what our future might have in store for us.

Throughout reading "Going up the Mountain" by Trevor Skikaze, I was continuously confused and conflicted. At first glance of the title "Going up the Mountain," I instantly thought the story would be about an individual's quest to climb a mountain and how they found themselves while doing so. I believed the mountain was a symbol of one's goals and objectives. The mountain is in the middle of the town and close proximity of all the residents, but no one puts in the effort to climb the mountain; they all find excuses for why they shouldn't climb it. This reflects on how we consistently make excuses and reasons for not reaching our objective. We all beat around the bush.
During the duration of the story, I was conflicted about when this story took place. The narrator's husband expressed to the protagonist that they couldn't climb the mountain because they have to get their kids scanned, and the dog has to be reindexed. I assumed this story took place in the future utopian world, with more advanced technology. I was curious to know why the kids are getting scanned, but they never explained nor elaborated this concern.
At the end of the story, I was disappointed to discover that she never climbs the mountain in the story. Although the narrator had all these excuses not to climb the mountain, I hoped she would break the chain of excuses and go for it.
