Also, that so many physicians were fabricating the results of their experiments on the patients to make it seem like their unnecessary surgeries actually helped

Some precedent is set, and is then followed for years or decades. Often, an assumption is made, then some (sometimes) logical argument stems from it. This precedent is reinforced over time.


It isn't so different from medical advances or theories, which establish a precedent and then reinforce it.
