The role I was given wasn't ideal in some aspects. I much prefer to be on camera rather than operating it so being put in charge of sound was difficult. It did offer something different for my portfolio though because it's something I haven't done before.

My role was to just stand by the camera with headphones on and monitor sound levels. I found it difficult to find a balance between having a clear, loud interview and not having background noise. If I had to do it again I would ask people to move the set because we ended up next to a sprinkler watering the pitch which had loads of background noise. I guess as the sound guy I could have pulled rank on where we film if it affects the sound. I didn't really consider the location as part of my role but it would have made the process much easier for myself and probably the editor too

News day one - Hemel show

This was probably the easiest part of my portfolio. As the reporter all I had to do was get an interview from the Hemel manager and match commentary.
I work for Hemel as the Head of Media so I was at the match regardless and I was already commentating on the game and interviewing the manager afterwards so it was just a case of adding in some questions to the interview at the end. The show was about how the new manager is getting on so asking him about how he's done so far at the end of the interview was good questioning from me because its a quote that can be directly put in the show. The commentary was something I think could have been done different because it was from a Hemel perspective to it just sounds like I'm willing them on to win when the show itself isn't being made by Hemel its being made for uni and therefore it should probably have been unbiased

I've presented before for Hemel so being the presenter in this didn't really phase me. I'd learned my lesson and wrote a script. Doing it with Nick helped too because it's easier to bounce of someone even if it is scripted than to just sit and talk on your own.

I think it went fine and we did the whole thing in one take so practically it went perfectly. I could probably have made it a bit more entertaining though, that's down to the scriptwriting, we made it too formal. Maybe a discussion would have been good rather than just linking segments.

This was a difficult one.

The biggest issue I found was getting Nick in a good light. I tried to film this so many times but he'd concede a few soft goals or it would be a really boring game. For the video to be good Hemel had to do okay and he had to be heavily involved.

I made this for the Hemel YouTube so I couldn't exactly make their goalkeeper look bad and I also couldn't have a video where he makes 2 basic saves.

Eventually we played QPR in a friendly, he conceded a few but saved a penalty and made a few other great saves so it made him look good and the penalty save provided something actually worth watching.

Spoke to the fans the next time they came to the ground and they loved it. Helped his image too because now everyone on twitter loves him

First time I've presented.

Should definatly have had some sort of script because I just ended up winging it. Not an awful thing because it was quite a casual match discussion and I get on really well with Dan so we just vibe off each other anyway.

I think there should have been a script because Dan had just got over COVID so missed a few games and I found myself almost filling him in on what he missed while we were recording.

It got a lot of views, majority of the fans that go to games saw it so clearly this shows they liked watching the pre match show so ill make sure if it ever goes behind closed doors again ill do it again

Absolute nightmare.

Gaffer Tapes was a weekly podcast about football managers but it just would never go our way.

I thought that my actual presentation was good. The chat was good and the fact that it was around a niche topic of football managers helped make it different from the rest. Doeke is good to work with and I've presented with Nick on a news day so it worked well.

Problem was every time we'd record it would become outdated before we could release it. We'd discuss if Ole should be sacked and he's sacked mid edit, we talk about the next Newcastle manager and they appoint Eddie Howe hours after recording.

Only thing we could improve on with that is literally editing and releasing the same day. Improve communication with Lewis the editor and set deadlines

First video 'which is the one in the portfolio' is the only one I've done on my own. Editing and commentary was a lot to do by myself.

Its our most viewed video by far and the one ive done the most work for so it must show they liked the editing. I think I read the target audience well putting some memes and jokes in there too. Not quite as serious as if I was doing it for Hemel.

100% needed to write a script, making up commentary on the go was a good idea to keep it natural but its post commentary, that means I have as many viewings of the footage as I want before I record so next time ill take advantage of that and write a loose script to go off. May sound less natural but removes any stuttering or repeating myself.

The first professional piece of work that I've done in media.

Wrote a couple of articles for them that were opinion pieces on who should win the Balon D'Or and if women should play in bigger stadiums. They went down really well and they got a lot of interactions and likes on social media compared to the size of the page.

Feedback from readers was very good however the editor did mention I need to research more, just because its an opinion piece doesn't mean you don't need facts, if anything you need them more so you can convince people your opinion is right or at least present a balanced argument

Matchday socials was a bit boring for Hemel just tweeting 'GOAL' wasn't very exciting to read.

The actual process of recording goal gifs and editing them down to be usable on twitter was easy enough its just about how I used them.

To start it didn't go that well because if someone scored id tweet their gif but it seems a bit out of context without a caption so they didn't do too well. For the next games I started to tweer the gifs with a caption like 'WHAT A GOAL' and then quote retweet it with a description. The interaction difference is night and day, even the national league retweet them
