For example dogs such as Dalmatians would require more exercise in comparison to a smaller dog such as a pug. Key things to remember when walking/exercising your dog is that dogs with smaller legs tend to not need walked as far as a dog which has longer legs. Dogs with smaller noses e.g. pugs, bulldogs may have difficulty breathing if they are exercised too much so smaller walks are advisory, Younger dogs e.g. puppies are more capable of doing exercise for longer periods of time in comparison to older dogs and any dog who is suffering from any joint issues e.g. elbows shouldn't participate in any vigorous activity as this may worsen their condition.

At the end of the course the dog is rewarded with a treat, toy or affection which is ultimately what keeps them focused of completing the course.  Most common flea found on dogs is Ctenocephalides canis (dog flea)

Can get fleas anywhere. live in environment/ can be passed on animal to animal. Longer hair makes it easier fore fleas to hide in

Can cause dogs to be very uncomfortable- scratching, hair loss, inflamed skin, flea dirt etc.

To prevent fleas, dog owners should invest in a flea comb and comb through the hair on a regular basis, and cut the dogs hair when necessary so its easier to spot fleas if they appear.

Dogs must regularly be treated for fleas by the vet by getting medication e.g Advantage (spot on treatment)

Most common tick in the UK is known as Ixodes Ricinus (castor bean tick)

Found often in long grassy areas e.g medows and wait to latch onto a host such as a dog!

If a dog is affected, th e tick will cause it to itch and become weak

Ticks are also carries of Lyme disease (Borreliosis) caused by the bacteria called 'Borrelia burgdorferi'-which can cause fever, weakness, loss of appetite and swollen joints. The disease would occur 2-5 months after a tick bite, although is less common in dogs (only shows symptoms in 5-10% of dogs) 

Make sure to check ticks on your dog regularly and if the dog has one, remove it right away- special tick tweezers are the most effective way of removing them

The vet can also give medication for ticks e.g Frontline (spot on treatment)

Bristle brush- Can use for any dog, helps remove dirt 

Wire brush- better used for longer-haired dogs and gogs with thicker or curly hair

Slicker brush- Help to de-matt underneath coat and remove lose hairs. Good for dogs with a thick undercoat with shorter hair.

Clippers- can be used to get rid of tough matts and tangles 

Nail clippers- for trimming nails 

Shampoo may get prescribed/recommended by the vet if the dog has a skin condition, if skin is normal, then a natural pet shampoo will do the trick!

Oatmeal shampoo is good for a dog with itchy/mildly irritated skin

Brush downwards and out away from the dog's skin in the direction where the coat has grown

Dogs generally do not like being brushed backwards, so be aware!

Be gentle- the dog's coat could get damaged easily by pulling and tearing the hairs, especially with matts

• Longer hair breeds eg German Shepards should be brushed weeky
• Shorter hair breeds e.g Boxers do not require regular brushing
• short and wiry breeds e.g Terriers need brushed with a slicker brush then back over with a metal brush
