Applying UDL: As I teach students with varying learning levels, I have, and will continue to, apply Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles. This involves providing different methods to present content, engage students, and allow them to demonstrate learning. These practices create an inclusive classroom environment where all students feel supported. This can include providing additional resources and scaffolding for students facing systemic barriers, such as those learning English as an Additional Language (EAL) or those with additional educational needs.

Promoting collaborative learning: Encouraging students of mixed abilities to work together creates an environment where they can learn from one another, engage in meaningful conversations, and participate in debates and questioning. This fosters social inclusion and strengthens peer learning.

UNESCO’s 2022 Global Report on Boys' Disengagement from Education highlights how gendered norms and expectations within families, communities, and schools can impact boys’ opportunities, motivation, and willingness to learn. In some cases, traditional ideas of masculinity make education seem incompatible with these norms, making school less appealing to boys.

In many developing countries, poverty, traditions, and limited resources often prevent boys from attending school. Families facing financial hardships may prioritise boys working to support household income rather than pursuing education. Additionally, in some communities, a focus on educating girls as part of empowerment initiatives means boys may be overlooked. For boys in rural areas, long distances to schools and costs associated with uniforms, books, and supplies further hinder access to education.

Enhanced learning: Digital tools like online quizzes, educational apps, and interactive websites provide engaging resources, personalised lessons, and easy access to information.

Skill development: Technology helps students build essential digital skills, preparing them for a future where technology is integral to most careers.

Teacher efficiency: Digitalisation streamlines teachers’ work, consolidating student information and reducing preparation time, allowing for a more student-centred approach.

Increased access: Online platforms and virtual classrooms ensure education reaches students in remote areas or those with limited access to traditional schools.

2. Authentic resources: Incorporating videos, news articles, and other authentic materials from the target language’s culture captures students’ interest while promoting cultural awareness. This aligns with the third strand of Junior Cycle Learning Outcomes, deepening students’ understanding of the culture associated with the language.

3. Assessment and feedback: Online quizzes and tests provide immediate feedback, helping students and teachers track progress and identify areas for improvement.
