YIM was one of the most memorable experiences of my life, the third day standing out in my memory most vividly. We traveled to Kediri by train on September 14th. It was my first time taking a train, and I found it surprisingly comfortable. I’ve always felt anxious about traveling away from home, especially without my parents, but my team was so supportive that I felt relaxed. Although I wasn’t relaxed enough to sleep on the train and ended up with only an hour of sleep, it didn’t matter. The following days went well, and I’m happy with that.

The 3rd day being on my birthday already made it special. We went to a nursing home, where we met and interacted with the elders. First, we assisted some of them get from one place to another, helping a few get in their wheelchairs and some others climb up the ramp. During their basking time, I observed that some of them loved to talk, while others were quieter. My team made bracelets for them, allowing each person to choose the colors before we assembled the accessories. They seemed to like it, and some even shared their life stories and lessons with us afterward.

After a few hours there, we went to the orphanage. We didn't plan much, deciding to go more freely compared to our more organized visit to the nursing home. The people at the orphanage aced the Bible quiz we organized; they knew many things on that field. We even ate bakso, their favorite food, after playing soccer. What caught me off guard was how some of the girls wanted a picture with me, saying they liked my style. That day of serving others just became even more memorable. I loved how my friends made the day more enjoyable too.

The entire YIM experience felt like a blessing—not just for me, but for everyone involved, including those we served. Visiting the nursing home made me miss my grandparents and helped me realize how much they truly mean to me. Just like my time in the orphanage that reminded me how valuable a family is. That place also helped me realize how a family doesn’t have to consist of people with the same blood or generation. It is a group of people that loves each other and is willing to help one another. In YIM, I’ve practiced patience in every place I’ve been by helping people of various ages and personalities, and I will be forever grateful for this opportunity.
