Witnesses said Selena was seen leaving a vehicle after returning from a party. The vehicle left the rest area, and when a relative arrived to pick Selena up, she was gone.

She was found nearly a year after her disappearance, frozen to death. 

Her mom, Jackie Big Hair, said that even though they will never have her daughter back, she was happy that her body was found.

Signs and chants include “Bring her home!” And “No More Stolen Sisters!”

Though these protests have helped get answers and resolutions from the government, questions are still rising about the circumstances of which these women are missing and being murdered, but no one seems to have an answer.

We applaud these activists for their work, and we encourage anyone that can to go out and help find answers. In 2019, as numbers started to rise, the Minnesota Office of Justice Programs started a task force to help prevent these circumstances and to find the women and children that had already gone missing. The task force has many members and they meet monthly to talk about their agendas and their mission.

Law enforcement immediately got involved and found her body within two weeks, and found the killer just one week later. 

Mainstream media prioritizes white women who have gone missing or been murdered, neglecting Indigenous women in the same position, which warrants changes in journalism and governmental entities to bring awareness to these victims as well.
