By 21 he was in Chicago  Illinois helping his brother by being a dried goods merchant. He quickly excelled in the ranks of the company. He became an entrepreneur who started his own company named "Marshall field and company". He also made donations to a college campus and  to "The Field Museum of Natural History ".
