If the modern game of elite AFL is so much more advanced in the knowledge, science and analysis of a player's kick then why can't players still get the fundamentals at times?

- line drills have historically been used in training to enhance kicking accuracy

- Current research suggests that 'training as you play' must be used to enhance kicking skills as in real life situations

- Activities that replicate the same types of kicks on game day should be adopted by coaches midweek at training

- Match simulations and scenario based training are preferred ways to train in the modern game

- 'Game sense approach' develops players to 'think' and leads to improvement in skill acquisition and performance

- This topic is important as there can sometimes be too much analysis surrounding the seemingly simple aspects of AFL - such as kicking.

- Should coaches and the high performance teams be taking different approaches when guiding training?

- Challenges conventional thinking on how practice is organised in an AFL high performance coaching environment

- Coaches should be aware of the differences between short-term performance improvement and an actual permanent learning gain

- Kicking in pairs is a wasteful activity, and provides little transfer to competition settings. Training should incorporate kicking in pairs over different distances, changing kicking directions or adding a defender against the player who is marking
- There is no perceptual-decision-making component by doing "lane-work drills"
- Questions that 10,000 deliberate practice hours are required to reach 'expert' status in a skill practiced (as Ericsson proposed 1993)
