It probably takes the new moon 4-5 days to reach the first quarter moon. I think they call this the quarter moon because the quarter moon is half way towards the full moon.

Well, since it takes the moon 29.5 days to complete the full phase cycle, I would have to say that it would take 7 days for the moon phase to go from new moon to first quarter. The first quarter is when half of the side facing Earth is lit. This is called a first quarter because the lit side is increasing the shown part.
