It is like a place they keep the dead. Victor no longer cares what his teachers think of him, but has wholeheartedly focused on his studies. He gained respect from his peers for his quick study. He is overly proud of himself and what he is accomplishing. He alludes to the Bible in that he alludes to genesis and how life is created. It is ironic that he finds life in death. There is a parallelism of life and death going hand in hand. He is foreshadowing the creation of his monster. I do think he is on the verge of insanity and I think he becomes insane for a short time when he is obsessed with his work and cannot see the evil in it.

Victor then goes to the mountains of his youth for peace where he feels better though ironically this will be a poor trip for him. This is the foreshadowing when he says he is happy, but he will soon be sad again

Chapter 8-
What is the theme of this chapter? Irony?

There is a lot of guilt and secrecy in this chapter. Victor /could/ explain everything and free Justine, but he doesn’t. She ends up confessing for the murder of his little brother even though she is innocent. The irony happens when Elizabeth and Victor tell Justine that they believe her innocence, and she tells them how happy it makes her and how she can die in peace, but it ends up making Victor feel even worse about the whole situation as he knows she will die. She has reached resolution while Victor struggles more with his secrets. Victor has a lot of internal struggle and no one knows about his monster. 😭

He foreshadows his own unhappiness throughout his thoughts on his way home
3. Life was supposed to begin anew for Victor when he returned home to see his family, but when he receives the newest hat his brother was killed he is thrown back into a deep depression. Likewise, two of his closest friends and family die as a result of the life he created.
4. The overall theme is “consequences matter”

The monster questions how he feels this way towards his own creation and he tells Victor to be calm.

Obviously their bodies are different, the monster is way stronger than Victor. The monster also has more compassion than Victor and tells him that he will protect his life with all he has. He tells Victor that he has suffered already and why would you burden him through more suffering. The monster seems thoughtful where Victor seems impulsive. Victor also is afraid and the monster is eager to talk with Victor and have him listen to his story.

The monster wants to be a part of life but he knows he can’t. He says that he does not even have the body of a man. “I was more agile than they and could consist on a courser diet. I bore the extremes of heat and cold with less injury to my frame. Hey stature far exceeded theirs” Beyond that, he observes the daily life of the family in the cottage, which gives him a knowledge of life’s occurrences, but not an actual sense of being. The monster has nothing to make him human but knowledge of what humans do. He says “but where were my friends and relations? No father had watched my infant days, no mother had blessed me with smiles and caresses... I had never yet seen a being resembling me or who claimed intercourse with me. What was I?”
