Reproductive technology in agriculture - Purple tomatoes

Purple tomatoes are genetically modified to have higher levels of anthocyanins than traditional red tomatoes. Genes from snapdragons were incorporated into the DNA of tomato plants.

Purple tomatoes were grown and farmed like ordinary tomatoes.

Genetic engineering and biotechnology.

The higher levels of anthocyanins double shelf life compared to ordinary tomatoes, as they help to delay over-ripening and help reduce susceptibility to fungus.

Anthocyanins also have many benefits such as the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, cancer and diabetes as well as anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. For this reason, the extraction of anthocyanins from some plants are considered potential pharmaceutical ingredients.

Like a lot of other GMO foods, there is risk of allergic reactions or increased antibiotic resistance.

People are also cautious about consuming genetically modified foods as the potential dangers and environmental impacts are unknown.

Microprojectile bombardment

Microprojectile bombardment is widely used for introducing foreign genes into plant cells and producing genetically modified plants with improved traits such as disease resistance and higher yield. Microprojectile bombardment has also been used to generate transgenic animals with specific desired traits. Allows the study of gene function and expression patterns in different tissues. It can also be used to deliver fluorescent dyes into cells and tissues to study cellular signaling processes.

The main scientific focus points surround the level of high voltage appropriate to the environment, and the specific particles that are used - as well as the amount of each particle. To ensure that the plant can deal with what is being introduced, without deteriorating.

There are signs of it being used to develop DNA vaccines by delivering DNA-encoding antigens directly into cells. As well as having applications in gene therapy for delivering therapeutic genes directly into target tissues to treat genetic disorders and other diseases.

The main concern regarding Microprojectile bombardment is the potential damage to plants and the environment, as some plants require a ‘healing’ period after particle bombardment takes place. Another limitation/worry is that the introduced DNA can randomly integrate into the host genome, which can result in unpredictable patterns of gene expression.

Artificial pollination, a type of pollination carried out by humans if natural pollinators are insufficient.

If a plant is not getting properly pollinated to grow sufficient produce, artificial pollination can be used. Green kiwifruit needs an average of 40 bee visits to each flower for proper pollination, if they are not receiving enough pollination, artificial pollination can be used to provide the flower with the extra amount of pollination it needs to receive in order to grow its fruit.

Knowledge of the specific plant anatomy, how and when pollination takes place and its needs when being pollinated in order to replicate the process of pollination correctly.

Allows farmers to grow produce that may not be naturally available during a certain season or environment due to factors that affect natural pollinators including small animals, bees and insects and abiotic pollinators such as wind.

Artificial pollination is costly both in time, money and labour which makes it an insufficient practice. Artificial pollination does not produce as many crops as natural pollination. The practice of artificial pollination also reduces genetic biodiversity in the ecosystem, making the plant more susceptible to diseases and can result in unfavourable genes being passed on.
