Istidraj: A Deceptive Blessing

Definition:

Istidraj refers to a situation where Allah grants continuous worldly blessings (such as wealth, power, success, or health) to a person despite their sinful or disobedient behavior. It is not a sign of Allah’s pleasure but rather a form of divine test or gradual punishment.

Concept in Islam:

• Allah gives these blessings to mislead the disbelievers or sinners further into arrogance and heedlessness.

• The person receiving istidraj may wrongly assume that they are favored by Allah, while in reality, they are being led closer to destruction due to their ungratefulness and disobedience.

Quranic Reference:

Allah mentions in the Quran:

“But when they forgot that by which they had been reminded, We opened to them the doors of every [good] thing until, when they rejoiced in that which they were given, We seized them suddenly, and they were [then] in despair.”(Surah Al-An’am: 44)

This verse indicates that when people ignore Allah’s guidance, He may grant them abundant worldly pleasures, but this is merely a trap before a severe punishment.

3. ⁠Reduced Anxiety: Knowing that you are on the right path and avoiding sinful behavior can alleviate stress and worry.

4. ⁠Positive Influence: Being a role model for others by practicing good behavior and avoiding sins can inspire and motivate those around you.

إِنَّمَا الأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَاتِ

Definition of Niyyah (Intention)

• Niyyah means the intention behind an action.

• It helps to know if an act is for Allah or for others.

• Without niyyah, a deed might not be accepted by Allah.

How to check if your niyyah is right:

1. Sincerity – Do it only for Allah.

2. Pure heart – No hidden motives.

3. Clear purpose – Know what and why you’re doing it.

4. Focus – Avoid distractions.

5. Consistency – Keep the same intention from start to end.

(عَمَلٌ)

Amal (Good Deeds & Worship)

• Amal means doing good actions and acts of worship.

• It shows our love and obedience to Allah.

• Amal benefits others too, like helping, giving, and being kind.

• Always do good with sincerity and regular effort.

• Intention (niyyah) is as important as the deed.

Examples of amal:

• Salah (prayer)

• Zakat (charity)

• Hajj (pilgrimage)

• Fasting

• Kindness and helping others

Things That Break Solat :

Talking, too much movement, impurity, no aurah cover, eating/drinking, lose wudu, change intention, not facing Qiblah

Sunnah in Solat :

Opening du’a, say “Amin”, tasbih in ruku’/sujud, du’a before salam, look at sujud spot, voice control

Sunat Ab’adh (If missed, do sujud sahwi):

First tahiyyat, selawat (Prophet & family), qunut in Subuh

Makruh (Not encouraged):

Looking around or up, praying near tasty food, need to pee, very sleepy

وَمَا خَلَقۡتُ ٱلۡجِنَّ وَٱلۡإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعۡبُدُونِ

“And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.”

SALAH (PRAYER)

• Sūrah al-ꜥAnkabut (29:45);

• ٱتۡلُ مَآ أُوحِىَ إِلَيۡكَ مِنَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ وَأَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ‌ۖ إِنَّ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ تَنۡهَىٰ عَنِ ٱلۡفَحۡشَآءِ وَٱلۡمُنكَرِ‌ۗ وَلَذِكۡرُ ٱللَّهِ أَڪۡبَرُ‌ۗ وَٱللَّهُ يَعۡلَمُ مَا تَصۡنَعُونَ

• “Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do.”

=Ṣalah instills awareness of Allah, restrains from immoral behavior, and encourages obedience.

Attributes of Ṣalah:

1)Ikhlas: sincerity for ALLAH

2)Fear of ALLAH

3)Remembrance of ALLAH

HAJJ

• Sūrah al-Baqarah (2:197);

• ٱلۡحَجُّ أَشۡهُرٌ۬ مَّعۡلُومَـٰتٌ۬‌ۚ فَمَن فَرَضَ فِيهِنَّ ٱلۡحَجَّ فَلَا رَفَثَ وَلَا فُسُوقَ وَلَا جِدَالَ فِى ٱلۡحَجِّ‌ۗ وَمَا تَفۡعَلُواْ مِنۡ خَيۡرٍ۬ يَعۡلَمۡهُ ٱللَّهُ‌ۗ وَتَزَوَّدُواْ فَإِنَّ خَيۡرَ ٱلزَّادِ ٱلتَّقۡوَىٰ‌ۚ وَٱتَّقُونِ يَـٰٓأُوْلِى ٱلۡأَلۡبَـٰبِ

“Hajj is during well-known months, so whoever has made ḥajj obligatory upon himself therein (by entering the state of ihram), there is (to be for him) no sexual relations and no disobedience and no disputing during ḥajj. And whatever good you do, Allah knows it. And take provisions but indeed, the best provision is fear Allah. And fear Me, O you of understanding

=Ḥajj disciplines believers to follow Allah’s commandments and abstain from prohibited acts.

Etiquette of Ḥajj:

1) Avoid indecent acts, disobedience, and disputes

2) Stay devoted to worship and good deeds

1) Wudu (Ablution)

6 Pillars : Intention, wash face, hands, wipe head, wash feet, follow order

Valid If : Muslim, mumayyiz, no haid/nifas, pure water, no block on skin, water not changed

Breaks Wudu :

Anything from front/back passage, unstable sleep, lose mind, touch opposite gender/private part

Washing Times :

1x = wajib, 2–3x = sunnah, >3x = makruh

Sunnah Acts :

Say Bismillah, wash hands, rinse mouth/nose, comb beard, wipe whole head, ears, do quickly, save water, du’a after

2) Tayammum (Dry Ablution)

Reason : No water or can’t use water (sick, danger, etc.)

3 Pillars : Intention, wipe face & hands with dust (2 taps), correct order

🕌 Summary: Solat in Different Situations

1) Illness

Pray sitting/lying, use head/eye signals if needed, tayammum if can’t use water.

2) Qasr & Jama’ (Travel ≥ 89km)

Zohor, Asar, Isyak → shorten to 2 rakaat (Qasr)

Combine prayers (Jama’):

• Taqdim – early (do both at 1st time)

• Ta’khir – late (do both at 2nd time)

3) Nawafil (Voluntary Prayers)

• Rawatib – before/after fardhu

• Dhuha – morning

• Tahajjud – night (after sleep)

• Witir – after Isyak (odd number)

• Istikharah, Hajat, Tawbah – when needed

• Tarawih – in Ramadan

Meaning: Focused, calm, humble, understand what you read, feel close to Allah

Distractions:

Doubts, thinking about worldly things, worry

Ways to Get Khushu ’:

• Prepare (clean, fresh wudu, not hungry/full)

• Pray early, quiet place

• Understand what you read

• Move less

• Look at sujud place

TRAITS THAT BUILD KHUSHU

1) Al-Ṭāʿah (Submission/Loyalty)

2) Al-Jihād (Struggle in the path of Allah)

3) Muḥāsabah (Reflection)

4) ʿIffah (Modesty/self-restraint from sinful behavior)

5) Tawaḍḍuʿ (Humility/Humbleness)

• builds taqwa by increasing self-control, empathy, and worship

• helping us stay aware of Allah, resist shaytan, and grow closer to Him.

Virtues found in sawm :

• Ṣabr: Patience during fasting challenges.

• Takrīm: Showing respect and honoring others.

• Raḥmah: Showing kindness and compassion to others.

• Zakāh purifies wealth and self, fostering generosity and reducing greed.

• خُذۡ مِنۡ أَمۡوَٲلِهِمۡ صَدَقَةً۬ تُطَهِّرُهُمۡ وَتُزَكِّيہِم بِہَا وَصَلِّ عَلَيۡهِمۡ‌ۖ إِنَّ صَلَوٰتَكَ سَكَنٌ۬ لَّهُمۡ‌ۗ وَٱللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ

Sūrah al-Tawbah (9:103);

=“Take, O Muhammad), from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase, and invoke (Allah’s blessings) upon them. Indeed, your invocations are reassurance for them. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing

• Zakāh : A mandatory charity prescribed by Islam. It has fixed rules, amounts, and conditions. It’s one of the Five Pillars of Islam.

• Ṣadaqah : A voluntary charity. You can give anytime, any amount, in money or good deeds. It’s encouraged but not compulsory.

So, zakāh is wajib (must), ṣadaqah is sunnah (optional). Both help the needy but differ in obligation and rules.

3) Tawakkul: Trusting and depending on Allah.

4) Ukhuwwah: Strengthening bonds of brotherhood and unity.

• Hajj:

o Obligatory once for those who meet conditions

o Performed during specific days in Dhul-Hijjah

o Includes standing at Arafah, more rituals

• Umrah:

o Optional, can be done anytime

o Fewer rituals (Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i)

o No standing at Arafah

Etiquette of Hajj:

• Avoid indecent acts, disobedience, and disputes

• Stay devoted to worship and good deeds

Etiquette of Umrah:

• Have sincere intention, stay patient.

• Respect others, focus on worship.

• Avoid arguments, keep making dua.

Virtues found in HAJJ / UMRAH

• Al-Taḍḥiyyah: Giving up comfort as a sign of obedience.

• Taqwā: Being mindful and conscious of Allah.
